Mein Name ist Tubutsch, Karl Tubutsch. Ich erwähne das nur deswegen, weil ich außer meinem Namen nur wenige Dinge besitze . . .Es ist nicht die Melancholie und Bitterkeit des Herbstes, nicht die Vollendung einer größeren Arbeit, nicht die Benommenheit des aus langer, schwerer Krankheit dumpf Erwachenden, ich verstehe überhaupt nicht, wie ich in diesen Zustand versunken bin. Um mich, in mir herrscht die Leere, die Öde, ich bin ausgehöhlt und weiß nicht wovon. Wer oder was dies Grauenvolle heraufgerufen hat: der große anonyme Zauberer, der Reflex eines Spiegels, das Fallen der Feder eines Vogels, das Lachen eines Kindes, der Tod zweier Fliegen: danach zu forschen, ja auch nur forschen zu wollen, ist vergeblich, töricht wie alles Fahnden nach einer Ursache auf dieser Welt.Ich sehe nur die Wirkung und Folge. Daß meine Seele das Gleichgewicht verloren hat, etwas in ihr geknickt, gebrochen ist, ein Versiegen der inneren Quellen ist zu konstatieren. Den Grund davon, den Grund meines Falles vermag ich nicht einmal zu ahnen, das Schlimmste: ich sehe nichts, wodurch in meiner trostlosen Lage eine wenn auch noch so geringe Änderung eintreten könnte. Weil eben die Leere in mir eine vollständige, sozusagen planmäßige ist bei dem beklagenswerten Fehlen irgendwelcher chaotischer Elemente. Die Tage gleiten dahin, die Wochen, die Monate. Nein, nein! nur die Tage. Ich glaube nicht, daß es Wochen, Monate und Jahre gibt, es sind immer wieder nur Tage, Tage, die ineinanderstürzen, die ich nicht durch irgendein Erlebnis zu halten vermag.
