Durante la contienda se refugiaron en los montes que crecen a orillas del río Uruguay, a la altura de Paysandú.Es una novela épica ambientada en Uruguay, testimonio de las guerras americanas del siglo XIX.El personaje principal de esta novela tiene este apodo y es un hijo de indio y española. Vive atrapado en sus conflictos de identidad y su afán épico de justicia.Tras los personajes ficticios de la novela, están los protagonistas y los episodios reales de la historia del Uruguay que irrumpen en las últimas páginas -Rivera, Lavalleja y los 33 Orientales, las batallas de Sarandí y de Ituzaingó- para darle más verosimilitud a la novela.El relato es muy ágil y consigue convertir una historia de amor romántico en una trama llena de peripecias políticas. Lejos de los tópicos del romanticismo en boga, Magariños no idealiza la figura del gaucho y prefiere las descripciones de un realismo costumbrista de corte sociologizante.
