Literary Nonfiction. Photography. Translated from the Slovenian by Brian Henry, Forrest Gander, and Aljaz Kovač. BERLIN is a lyrical account of the city as well as a book of discoveries, allusions, and traces, an homage to great literary figures who have lived in Berlin. 31 prose miniatures are combined with 21 black-and-white photos taken by Steger in the city. Instead of describing, Steger works to create a web of Benjaminian passages and allusions, a flaneurian book full of small details that takes the reader on a smooth yet unpredictable journey through the city, which turns out to be a city of texts.
Notable for its moral engagement, Ale teger's poetry is acutely precise in its observation and concentration. Multi-layered and technically versatile, ingenious and inventive, his poetry is adventurous and playful yet serious in intention, and incessantly curious in its investigations. He loves to ambush the reader with the unexpected.
The first US edition of rising world-poetry star Ales Steger's most acclaimed book. The most prominent Slovenian poet of his generation.
Even the darkest and most serious of these poems are tempered with coy playfulness.
In the tradition of Bulgakov, Gogol and Kafka Ales Steger lets the forces of good and evil collide in this grandiose literary thriller. This is a debut novel filled with striking personae, haunting images and a grotesque plot. It proves, in the end, to be a journey into the heart of a European darkness.
