He also provides a vivid depiction of Italian society during the time period, including the power struggles between the ruling class and the common people. The Betrothed is considered a masterpiece of Italian literature and has been translated into numerous languages. This particular edition, V21 of the Harvard Classics, features an introduction by Charles W. Eliot and includes a biographical sketch of Manzoni.1909. This is in form an historical novel. It is rather psychological and sentimental. The scene is laid in Lombardy between 1628-1631, and the plot deals with the thwarting of the love of two peasants by a local tyrant.
