    Le Veloce est une chronique qui ne manque pas d'interet, et cela a plusieurs egards: elle pique notre curiosite quant a l'histoire de la conquete de l'Algerie par la France, et nous devoile la vision que les Francais avaient, a l'epoque, des populations et des cultures d'Afrique du Nord. Pour autant, il est difficile aujourd'hui de lire ce texte au premier degre. Notre auteur favori ne montre pas ici, a notre gout, l'humour et le recul historique et culturel qu'on lui connait dans d'autres recits de voyages plus truculents, comme Le Corricolo ou Le Speronare. On sent que l'Afrique du Nord lui est trop exotique, et le mode de voyage adopte, en groupe et sur un bateau officiel, ne contribue pas a reduire cette distance. Des le debut, une joute de tir au fusil avec le premier Arabe qu'il rencontre, et qui tourne a l'avantage de l'auteur, a de quoi surprendre par son manque de modestie: il etait evident qu'il s'eloignait ecrase sous le poids de son inferiorite, lance Dumas. Et quelques lignes plus loin: Le Maroc tout entier etait humilie dans la personne de son representant. Cette anecdote donne a peu pres le ton plutot conquerant de l'ensemble de l'ouvrage.

    Roman méconnu, 'Les Frères corses' (1844) a fait l'objet de douze adaptations cinématographiques. C'est un texte court, bref roman, longue nouvelle. Deux jumeaux, le sauvage Lucien, qui choisit la tradition, c'est-à-dire la Corse, Louis, qui se francise, et se voit accuser de renier ses racines et vit à Paris. Louis mourra en victime expiatoire de sa double appartenance, à la Corse par sa naissance, à Paris par son engagement intellectuel: il meurt pour avoir soutenu les valeurs chevaleresques qui avaient cours dans son île (l' honneur de la femme d'un ami). Malgré leur séparation, les jumeaux sont restés unis par télépathie, don héréditaire de leur famille. Les héros, dans la marche en avant du monde, éprouvent donc la nostalgie des hautes valeurs du passé, comme les Mousquetaires. On ne peut donc laisser reposer un récit si rapide, si chargé de matières diverses, et qui, commençant avec la lenteur des impressions de voyage, finit comme une tragédie. Ce roman est destiné à deux catégories de lecteurs: les Corses, et les autres.

Ce qui aboutit à la proscription de Robin Hood par le roi. Après avoir vainement tenté de résister, Robin n'a d'autre solution que de se réfugier dans la forêt avec quelques Saxons dont Petit-Jean et frère Tuck. Pour subvenir aux besoins de sa petite troupe, il instaure un impôt sur le passage des voyageurs à travers la forêt, proportionnel à leur richesse.
