Roman méconnu, 'Les Frères corses' (1844) a fait l'objet de douze adaptations cinématographiques. C'est un texte court, bref roman, longue nouvelle. Deux jumeaux, le sauvage Lucien, qui choisit la tradition, c'est-à-dire la Corse, Louis, qui se francise, et se voit accuser de renier ses racines et vit à Paris. Louis mourra en victime expiatoire de sa double appartenance, à la Corse par sa naissance, à Paris par son engagement intellectuel: il meurt pour avoir soutenu les valeurs chevaleresques qui avaient cours dans son île (l' honneur de la femme d'un ami). Malgré leur séparation, les jumeaux sont restés unis par télépathie, don héréditaire de leur famille. Les héros, dans la marche en avant du monde, éprouvent donc la nostalgie des hautes valeurs du passé, comme les Mousquetaires. On ne peut donc laisser reposer un récit si rapide, si chargé de matières diverses, et qui, commençant avec la lenteur des impressions de voyage, finit comme une tragédie. Ce roman est destiné à deux catégories de lecteurs: les Corses, et les autres.

C'est en traversant la forêt de Sherwood pour se rendre au château du terrible baron Fitz-Awine, sheriff de Nottingham, afin de demander la main de Lady Christabel sa fille, qu'Allan Clare et sa soeur la jolie Marianne font la connaissance de Robin Hood dans des circonstances plutôt mouvementées. Ce jeune archer très habile et très rapide, confié dès son plus jeune âge au brave forestier Gilbert par deux inconnus, est en fait l'héritier direct du comté de Huntingdon. L'enlèvement de Christabel, conçu par Allan et Robin, tourne court, provoquant le départ de celle-ci pour Londres, bientôt suivie par Allan qui part à sa recherche. Le baron Fitz-Awine, furieux du rôle joué par Robin, lui voue alors une haine terrible: il fait incendier la maison de Gilbert, entrave le bon déroulement du procès intenté par Robin pour retrouver ses droits, se plaint au roi Henri II de mauvais traitements... Ce qui aboutit à la proscription de Robin Hood par le roi. Après avoir vainement tenté de résister, Robin n'a d'autre solution que de se réfugier dans la forêt avec quelques Saxons dont Petit-Jean et frère Tuck. Pour subvenir aux besoins de sa petite troupe, il instaure un impôt sur le passage des voyageurs à travers la forêt, proportionnel à leur richesse.

Alexandre Dumas est un écrivain français né le 24 juillet 1802 à Villers-Cotterêts et mort le 5 décembre 1870 à Puys, près de Dieppe. Il est le fils de Thomas Alexandre Dumas dit le général Dumas, et le père des écrivains Henry Bauër et Alexandre Dumas dit Dumas fils, auteur de La Dame aux camélias. La paternité de certaines de ses oeuvres lui est contestée. Dumas fut ainsi soupçonné par plusieurs critiques de son époque d'avoir eu recours à des nègres littéraires, notamment Auguste Maquet. Toutefois les recherches contemporaines ont montré que Dumas avait mis en place une coopération avec ce dernier: Dumas s'occupait de choisir le thème général et modifiait les ébauches de Maquet pour les rendre plus dynamiques. On ne peut donc lui nier la paternité de son oeuvre, même s'il a été aidé

En 1660, d'Artagnan et Athos participent, chacun à sa façon, à la restauration de Charles II sur le trône d'Angleterre. El Salteador est un roman historique situe en Espagne comme quelques autres romans de Dumas (dont Le Batard de Mauleon). Dumas disait: il y a une chose que je ne sais pas faire: c'est un livre ou un drame sur des localites que je n'ai pas vues... (ce qui ne l'a pas empeche de rediger des recits de voyage dans des pays ou il n'etait jamais alle!). Pour ses descriptions, il se sert des observations faites pendant son voyage en Espagne en 1845. En toile de fond, il met en scene Charles Quint alors que, age de 19 ans, il arrive en Castille. Accueilli plutot fraichement par les Espagnols, il sent que son autorite va etre difficile a instaurer. Il est vrai qu'aux yeux de son peuple, il a un physique trop germanique (cheveux blonds, barbe rousse), il a le defaut d'avoir passe toute sa jeunesse en Flandre et en plus sa mere est folle! Les personnages dont l'histoire va se meler a celle de Charles Quint sont peut-etre moins approfondis que dans les meilleurs romans de Dumas mais on se laisse vite prendre par les rebondissements de l'action; on devine un drame dans les relations qui se nouent entre les personnages rien qu'a quelques phrases, quelques mots que l'auteur distille si bien.
