The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815-1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature. The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood."

El Salteador est un roman historique situé en Espagne comme quelques autres romans de Dumas (dont Le Bâtard de Mauléon). Dumas disait: il y a une chose que je ne sais pas faire: c'est un livre ou un drame sur des localités que je n'ai pas vues... (ce qui ne l'a pas empêché de rédiger des récits de voyage dans des pays où il n'était jamais allé!). Pour ses descriptions, il se sert des observations faites pendant son voyage en Espagne en 1845. En toile de fond, il met en scène Charles Quint alors que, âgé de 19 ans, il arrive en Castille. Accueilli plutôt fraîchement par les Espagnols, il sent que son autorité va être difficile à instaurer. Il est vrai qu'aux yeux de son peuple, il a un physique trop germanique (cheveux blonds, barbe rousse), il a le défaut d'avoir passé toute sa jeunesse en Flandre et en plus sa mère est folle! Les personnages dont l'histoire va se mêler à celle de Charles Quint sont peut-être moins approfondis que dans les meilleurs romans de Dumas mais on se laisse vite prendre par les rebondissements de l'action; on devine un drame dans les relations qui se nouent entre les personnages rien qu'à quelques phrases, quelques mots que l'auteur distille si bien.

À la différence des grands romans de l'auteur, Sylvandire démarre bien lentement. Ses ressorts dramatiques initiaux paraissent mous, parfois invraisemblables, telle la mascarade du fantôme de Constance. Heureusement, ils vont grandissant à mesure que se développe l'intrigue. Les scènes de prison alternent entre le drame et le comique. L'acte de vengeance donne lieu à une scène à grand déploiement d'une charge dramatique qui détonne presque avec le ton plutôt léger de l'ensemble. Le dénouement, peut-être trop rapide, fait ressortir combien Dumas maîtrisait aussi le genre comique.

A pyrotechnical display was the finish to all grand public ceremonies, and the Parisians were fond of them although they might make fun. The ground was happily chosen, as it would hold six thousand spectators. Around the equestrian statue of the King, stands were built circularly to give a view of the fireworks, to be set off at ten or twelve feet elevation. The townsfolk began to assemble long before seven o'clock when the City Guard arrived to keep order. This duty rather belonged to the French Guards, but the Municipal government had refused the extra pay their Commander, Colonel, the Marshal Duke Biron, demanded, and these warriors in a huff were scattered in the mob, vexed and quarrelsome. They sneered loudly at the tumult, which they boasted they would have quelled with the pike-stock or the musket-butt if they had the ruling of the gathering.
