Life Lessons: Truths Concerning People Who Have Lived is a book written by Alice Hubbard that explores the experiences and lessons learned by individuals throughout their lives. The book delves into various topics such as love, success, failure, happiness, and personal growth. Through the stories of different people, the author highlights the importance of perseverance, self-awareness, and the ability to adapt to change. The book also emphasizes the value of learning from one's mistakes and the importance of taking risks in order to achieve one's goals. Overall, Life Lessons: Truths Concerning People Who Have Lived is a thought-provoking and insightful read that offers valuable advice and inspiration for readers seeking to live a fulfilling life.1909. Written by the wife of Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft Press and Community. Hubbard writes in the Foreward: An aspiring student one day asked Dr. Charles Wesley Emerson the classic question. How can I become great? Eat great men! was the Doctors quick reply. There is a story that Indians believed the spirits of those whom they had vanquished, entered into and reinforced the victor by so much the more strength. Carlyle said, Great men taken up in any way are profitable company. We build upon the past-or rather upon the lives of the great who have given color and form to the past. There has been no attempt in Life Lessons to write biography. In the seven subjects, the influence of the man or woman upon life and the times has been the motive of the writing. Somewhat of the influence of the lives of these great people is herein recorded in plain, simple language, the expression often homely. Possibly the books only excuse for being is that it is the record of honest thought, written on stolen time. Contents: Susan B. Anthony; David Swing; Mary Wollstonecraft; Robert Louis Stevenson; Friedrich Froebel; Henry David Thoreau; and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. MARRIAGE, although a most common incident in life, is understood as little as is birth, life and death. People are perpetually ignorant on the subject, and insist upon remaining in this state until the veil of their temple is rent in twain, and their holy of holies has daylight thrown upon it. Love is a sacred mystery whose secret is as yet locked away from mortals. We recognize a few of its manifestations and dream of its power. We connect it in our thoughts with marriage and birth, but we assume its presence: we do not bring proof. Love is spirit, and can not be analyzed nor understood.

In An American Bible, Alice Hubbard lays before us a rich feast of reminders that our forebears were practical, hard-working freethinkers who respected freedom and responsibility above all else. This inspiring collection features motivational, thought-provoking texts from Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Robert Ingersoll, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Elbert Hubbard, who wrote, "We need a bible that shall give us facts concerning business principles, acceptable and honorable principles that apply to new methods, new morals, new needs. We need a bible that shall teach us to be well, and how to keep well; that will inspire us to obey the common laws of health; that will teach us how to exercise, work, play, think; how to breathe and to eat. We need instruction in the democracy of man's own self, the family, the town, the State, the general government."Alice Hubbard (1861-1915), who compiled this collection, was an influential feminist and general manager of The Roycrofters collective, an artists' community in East Aurora, New York. The collective was founded by her husband, Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915), who was an important force in the American Arts and Crafts Movement. It included printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders who followed "a belief in working with the head, hand, and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness."The Roycroft campus is now a National Historic Landmark. The Hubbards died in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, but their legacy lives on in this and many other inspirational works.
