Early one Saturday morning, Kenzi slowly opened one blue eye and then the other, squinting and hiding from the sun as it streamed in through her bedroom window. Kenzi smiled when she remembered what her family would be doing on this special Saturday. Thus begins the story of a magical day in the life of seven-year-old Kenzi. After a nearby forest was burned the previous year, she and her family volunteer in their community's first-ever reforestation project. Throughout the day, Kenzi learns the importance of teamwork, friendship, and much more. When Juan-a new boy in the neighborhood-befriends Kenzi, they share their love of animals and work together to help with the rebuilding of the forest, realizing that every person's effort counts. At the end of the day, Kenzi gets the biggest surprise of all-the chance to see something she's only dreamed about.
From the very beginning of this endearing story we meet Little Kenzi, a girl who loves all kinds of things, but most especially Silly Sally, the doll that has been with Little Kenzi since the day she was born. When Little Kenzi meets Sara, a new girl at school, she is shocked to discover that Sara has never had a doll of her own. Wondering how it could be possible that a girl her age doesn't have a doll, Little Kenzi feels sad. What happens next will surprise and delight readers of all ages as Little Kenzi shows us the true meaning of friendship, kindness and generosity.
Summer camp has begun for Kenzi, Juan and Sara. This year, the summer program will hold its very first Diversity Day. Camp counselor Linda has placed the three children in the same group to make decorations and plan one of the special day's activities. As the three friends work together, they discover many differences between them, including the way they look, what they like to do, and even how they do things. When Diversity Day arrives, everyone is excited to participate in the games and activities. What they don't expect is the lesson Linda shares with them: "Today we celebrate what makes us each special and unique ... and what makes us alike," Linda tells the children. Kenzi soon learns exactly what that means for her and her friends.
