Aloysius Bertrand (1807-1841) står med sit korte levned indskrevet i litteraturens annaler som den romantiske digters arketype: monomani, armod, tuberkulose, tidlig død; en sværmerisk poète maudit, som gik til grunde for ét ophøjet værk. Værket er i hans tilfælde den franske klassiker Gaspard de la nuit, som nu foreligger i sin første komplette danske oversættelse. Siden sin oprindelige udgivelse (posthumt i 1842) har dette hybridværk af billedkunst og poetiske tableauer verseret i diverse varianter, som her endelig samles og udredes for danske læsere.Nattens Gaspard består af prosadigte i seks dele, der ledsages af oversætterens efterskrift, kommentarer og fantastiske illustrationer, som binder værket smukt sammen. Stykkerne er stramt komponerede og veksler mellem gotiske, komiske, groteske og satiriske motiver. Surrealisterne døbte Bertrand ’en fortidens surrealist’, og han betragtes som prosadigtets fader – imiteret af Baudelaire i Le Spleen de Paris, besunget af Mallarmé, forlæg for H.C. Andersens Billedbog uden Billeder og fejret af Georg Brandes, der beskrev hans stil som ”en Billedskærers og Guldsmeds Kunst i Sprogets Behandling.”
