Da den populære franske romanforfatter Alphonse Daudet som 45-årig begyndte at få alvorlige symptomer på den syfilis, han havde lidt af siden teenageårene, valgte han at håndtere sygdommen ved at skrive om den. Hos Daudet kom syfilissen til udtryk som tabes dorsalis, rygmarvstæring, der resulterer i gangbesvær, koordinationsproblemer og voldsomt stærke smerter. I årene 1885-95 registrerede han i notatform sygdommens udvikling og smertens mange former, ligesom han beskrev de forskellige frugtesløse behandlingsformer, han lod sig underkaste, tillige med det stigende forbrug af morfin og sovemedicin. Alt sammen skrevet med en ubarmhjertig stoisk vilje til indsigt i sig selv og smertens væsen, men galgenhumoren er sjældent langt væk – for eksempel når han skildrer de kursteder, hvor borgerskabets syfilitikere flokkedes.Daudets rejse gennem smertens rige er både et uafrysteligt vidnesbyrd om livet som ensom smertepatient og en lille litterær perle om, hvordan sproget tager kampen op mod den stumhed, der truer, når den slidte og forpinte krop gør krav på al opmærksomhed.

Il décrit les aventures burlesques de Tartarin, chef putatif des chasseurs de casquettes de Tarascon, allant chasser le lion en Algérie. C'est un héros naïf, qui se laisse berner par des personnages peu scrupuleux, voire par lui-même tout au long de son voyage vers l'Atlas. Cette histoire fut inspirée à Daudet par son cousin Henri Reynaud, qui lui racontait ses voyages lors de ses retours d'Afrique.

Les " Lettres de mon moulin " est un recueil de nouvelles d'Alphonse Daudet. Deux nouvelles sont racontées par l'inimitable et talentueux Fernandel, " La chèvre de Monsieur Seguin " et " Le curé de Cucugnan ".
Fernandel est un des artistes français les plus populaires, sympathiques et talentueux de ces dernières décennies. Tout à la fois chanteur, chansonnier, humoriste, comédien, nous le retrouvons dans ce disque dans le rôle de conteur, qui lui sied à merveille. Une belle voix, enjouée et chantante, un authentique accent du Midi, pour nous conter les célèbres Lettres de mon Moulin d'Alphonse Daudet. Parmi celles-ci, Le Curé de Cucugnan est un sermon en 1858 et rendu célèbre par Alphonse Daudet qui l'a repris dans sa nouvelle. À Cucugnan, dans l'Aude, la foi n'est plus présente. Le curé raconte dans un sermon qu'il a rêvé qu'il allait au Paradis puis au Purgatoire et n'y trouvait pas les habitants décédés de Cucugnan ; il les a trouvés en Enfer. Il fait alors le projet de confesser tout le village et de redonner la foi à tous les habitants.
Le moulin de maître Cornille est le seul à tourner encore depuis que la machine à vapeur est arrivée. Depuis longtemps, plus personne ne lui apporte de blé mais les ailes du moulin continuent de tourner - n'y a-t-il pas anguille sous roche ? Cette nouvelle d'Alphonse Daudet a été publiée dans le célèbre recueil des Lettres de mon moulin, un classique de la littérature française pour petits et grands.
