The Nabob is a novel written by French author Alphonse Daudet and was first published in 1898. The story revolves around a wealthy Frenchman named Jrme-Napolon Trottemant, who acquires a fortune in India and returns to France to live a lavish lifestyle. The protagonist, Trottemant, is referred to as the ""Nabob"" due to his newfound wealth and status. The novel explores the themes of wealth, power, and corruption as Trottemant navigates his way through French high society. He is initially welcomed with open arms but soon finds himself the target of jealous rivals and scheming social climbers. The Nabob's extravagant spending and lack of social grace make him an easy target for those who seek to take advantage of him.As the story progresses, Trottemant becomes increasingly isolated and disillusioned with his new life. He longs for the simplicity of his former existence in India and the genuine friendships he had there. The Nabob's story is ultimately a cautionary tale about the dangers of wealth and the importance of staying true to oneself.Overall, The Nabob is a gripping tale of ambition and excess that offers a fascinating glimpse into French society at the turn of the 20th century. Daudet's vivid descriptions and insightful commentary make this novel a timeless classic that is still relevant today. In Two Volumes. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
