Les pages qui suivent sont issues d'un ouvrage intitulé Histoire de la Turquie dont le premier tome, publié en 1855, consacre en guise d'introduction plusieurs chapitres à la vie de Mahomet. Ce dernier y est décrit par Lamartine de façon élogieuse, dans un exposé visant à faire oeuvre pédagogique au sujet d'un Islam qui faisait déjà l'objet en Europe de vives suspicions résultantes le plus souvent d'une méconnaissance profonde de cette religion et de façon plus générale des cultures orientales. Lamartine cherche donc à réhabiliter Mahomet, à dissiper les doutes sur ses intentions. Il en résulte une oeuvre surprenante dont on soulignera en premier lieu le caractère positif du message associé à la volonté d'établir un pont entre le monde Chrétien et le monde Musulman. Extrait: O Mahomet, tu es l'envoyé de Dieu, et je suis son ange Namous (ou Gabriel), confident de Dieu. Je levai les yeux, je vis l'ange, et je restai longtemps éperdu à la place où je l'avais vu disparaître. Il est impossible de ne pas voir dans ce songe et dans la vision imaginaire qui en fut la suite l'obsession maladive d'une idée fixe de Mahomet, ne sachant encore à cette époque ni lire ni écrire, et convaincu cependant, par son génie intérieur, qu'un LIVRE était l'instrument nécessaire de la transformation religieuse de ses idolâtres compatriotes. Courage et réjouis-toi, lui dit sa femme consolée, par celui qui tient dans ses mains l'âme de Kadidjé, j'espère que tu seras le prophète de notre nation.
