Gunvor Thorsdatter er den sidste ætling på Hærø i Nordnorge - hun er en kvinde med stærke lederegenskaber og et forvirrende kærlighedsliv. Hun forlover sig med den nye unge distrikslæge, men kommer i sjælelig konflikt, da hun erfarer hans svagheder. Alvilde Prydz, der var samtidig med Amalie Skram, går meget op i kvindens ret til et personligt liv, også i ægteskabet.Sproget er norsk, men i denne udgave ligger det så tæt op ad dansk, at det faktisk er det samme.
