Nervo fue un poeta romántico, al que se cataloga habitualmente como modernista por su estilo y su época. En su escritura utilizó un gran número de recursos literarios como el misticismo y la tristeza del poeta y el cambio o renovación de la métrica y la elegancia en los ritmos. Los temas de los poemas de Nervo son muy variados, marcados por experiencias tristes en su vida. En su modo de escritura se refiere a pérdidas muy grandes en su familia, empezando por la muerte de su padre cuando él solo contaba con 9 años dejando a su familia un tanto desamparada en varios sentidos. Luego llegaron otras dos muertes que terminarían de marcar su modo sombrío y melancólico de escribir. La muerte de su hermano Luis, también poeta, quien se suicidó en la flor de la vida fue un gran impacto para él porque era un joven educado bajo los dogmas más ortodoxos de la fe cristiana. Pero es quizá la muerte de la persona que él amaba, Ana Cecilia Dailliez, la pérdida que más le afectó.
