Il devient soldat sous le nom de Belle-Rose et fait des études. Suzanne lui écrit que son père l'a mariée à Monsieur d'A. Jacques s'éprend de Mme de Chateaufort. Il est accusé de désertion et condamné à mort mais acquitté in extremis et promu lieutenant. En 1667, il va combattre les espagnols en Flandre avec le général de Luxembourg. Sa soeur Claudine lui donne une lettre de Suzanne qui lui dit qu'elle est toujours amoureuse de lui. M d'A meurt. Lors d'une mission confiée par M de L, Jacques est embastillé mais Suzanne le fait libérer mais se fait mettre dans un couvent. Jacques la libère. Ils vont chez Mme de Chateaufort, s'épousent et ont Geneviève. Mme de Chateaufort est empoisonnée. En 1672, Louis XVI envahit la Hollande, Jacques trouve un gué sur le Rhin et devient capitaine et vicomte. Il tue l'empoisonneur de Mme de Chateaufort.

On sait que Mme Rose vivait seule avec une vieille servante dans une petite maison où jamais elle ne recevait personne, si ce n'est M. de Francalin, le curé d'Herblay et quelques notables du village qui venaient lui demander des secours pour leurs pauvres. Les personnages secondaires restent dans nos mémoires, comme le pêcheur Canada, sans oublier l'adorable chien Tambour au destin tragique

Son bataillon est décimé. Un jour, il va à Paris et constate que la vie est paisible. Il retourne au front, livre de grosses batailles, puis l'armistice est signé, Paris se rend. Au mois de juillet 1870, j'achevais la troisième année de mes études à l'École centrale des arts et manufactures. C'était le moment où la guerre, qui allait être déclarée, remplissait Paris de tumulte et de bruit. Dans nos théâtres, tout un peuple fouetté par les excitations d'une partie de la presse, écoutait debout, en le couvrant d'applaudissements frénétiques, le refrain terrible de cette Marseillaise qui devait nous mener à tant de désastres. Des régiments passaient sur les boulevards, accompagnés par les clameurs de milliers d'oisifs qui croyaient qu'on gagnait des batailles avec des cris. La ritournelle de la chanson des Girondins se promenait par les rues, psalmodiée par la voix des gavroches. Cette agitation factice pouvait faire supposer à un observateur inattentif que la grande ville désirait, appelait la guerre; le gouvernement, qui voulait être trompé, s'y trompa....
