"God, conquered, will become Satan; Satan, conquering, will become God. May the fates spare me this terrible lot; I love the Hell which formed my genius. I love the Earth where I have done some good, if it be possible to do any good in this fearful world where beings live but by rapine. Now, thanks to us, the god of old is dispossessed of his terrestrial empire, and every thinking being on this globe disdains him or knows him not.

The Well of Saint Clare is a novel written by French author Anatole France. The story is set in medieval France and follows the life of a young monk named Ambrose, who is sent to the monastery of Saint Clare. The monastery is known for its miraculous well, which is said to have healing powers.Ambrose is initially skeptical of the well's powers, but he soon becomes convinced of its ability to heal. He becomes obsessed with the well and spends all his time studying its history and the stories of those who have been healed by its waters. As Ambrose becomes more and more involved with the well, he begins to uncover a dark secret about the monastery and its past. He discovers that the well was not always the peaceful and holy place it is now, and that there are those who will stop at nothing to keep its true history hidden. The novel explores themes of faith, religion, and the corrupting influence of power. It is a gripping tale of mystery and intrigue, set against the backdrop of medieval France. On coming to himself, he smelt the perfume of myrtles and roses, and looking out of window saw a garden that descended in successive declivities to the sea. Signora Loreta, standing at his bed's head, took up her viol and began playing a tender air. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Fanny started off early one morning, like little Red Riding Hood, to visit her grandmother, who lives quite at the other end of the village. But Fanny did not stop like Red Riding Hood to pick hazel nuts. She went straight on her way, and did not see any wolf.Even when quite a long way off, she could see her grandmother seated on her stone doorstep, the dear grandmother who smiled with her toothless mouth and opened her old arms thin as grape vines to welcome her little granddaughter. Fanny's heart was filled with delight at the prospect of spending a whole day at her grandmother's. And her grandmother, having no longer any cares or tasks, but living like a cricket near the fire, is happy too to see the little daughter of her son, a sweet reminder of her youth.
