... Un panégyriste digne de Cook, ce faillit être Joubert. D'ailleurs, il n'a pas concouru. Parmi les manuscrits conservés par l'Académie de Marseille dans ses archives et que j'ai pu examiner, j'en trouve trois de M. Lemontey, un du Père Paris, de l'Oratoire, un autre du Père Martelot, de l'Oratoire de Grasse, un autre de M. Blanc Gilli, de Marseille. D'autres sont anonymes. Aucun n'est de Joubert: aucun n'est de son écriture et aucun ne ressemble de nulle manière aux brouillons de lui que j'ai sous les yeux. Mais il a eu, de loin, le projet de concourir. On pourrait se demander s'il ne préparait pas, tout bonnement, un article ou peut-être un volume: non, il travaillait pour l'Académie de Marseille. Une ou deux citations suffisent à le démontrer. Je l'ai loué (Cook) aux bords de la Méditerranée. Cette place convenait à cette cérémonie. Cook a rendu toutes les mers plus navigables... Aux bords de la Méditerranée, c'est à Marseille. Puis: On dit qu'une femme même, mêlant ses acclamations à celles des sages, a voulu parer d'une fleur la couronne qui est préparée dans Marseille à celui qui l'aura le mieux loué. Qui êtes-vous, ô vous qui prenez à la gloire de Cook un intérêt si généreux et qu'une vertu si mâle et si sévère a tant émue ? On vous dit étrangère, on vous dit princesse...

... Picrate rageait. Il bondit, résolu, puisqu'il le fallait, à escalader un fiacre, afin de se mettre au niveau de l'odieux ennemi. Celui-ci, de son fouet, cingla. Picrate dédaigna les coups. En peu d'instants, suivi de son chariot comme un colimaçon de sa coquille, mais leste des bras comme un singe, il eut accompli son ascension. Le cocher, qui ne voulait pas le jeter bas et qui cherchait à se délivrer de ce démon, descendit de l'autre côté sur la chaussée, en toute hâte, abandonnant son fouet. Picrate saisit le fouet et, drôlement enchâssé entre le siège et le tablier, il fouetta autour de lui, en cercle, aussi loin que ses bras, bien allongés, pouvaient aller. Et il vociférait, à l'adresse de tout le monde, et de la destinée, et de la providence, de mortelles injures. On méprisa les injures; même on en rit, et, pour se garer des coups de fouet, on s'écarta. Mais Picrate, de la main gauche, tint les guides, prêt à utiliser le fiacre comme un char de combat. Il fallut qu'on se précipitât sur le cheval, qui s'agitait, et qu'on se précipitât aussi sur Picrate et qu'on le déposât sur le trottoir. Ce ne fut point aisé...

Un jour, je suis allé à Égine et, parmi les ruines du temple d'Aphaïa, sur la terrasse d'où la vue est si belle et charmante, il m'a semblé que l'âme ancienne de la Grèce se révélait à moi. Quelle étonnante épiphanie ! Une joie merveilleuse l'accompagnait. Or, l'air était adorablement pur, frais et lumineux. Il y avait, dans l'atmosphère, une gaieté qui m'invitait à goûter mieux encore le plaisir d'un mystère qui se dévoile. Du reste, cette aventure dépendit de quelques hasards; et je ne prétends pas que le fantôme hellénique ait à Égine son refuge où on le trouve certainement. Plutôt, je le croirais épars en divers lieux; et j'en avais aperçu des bribes çà et là ce qui me manquait, je l'ai rencontré à Égine. Ainsi l'on aurait, de place en place, ramassé plusieurs tessons d'un vase peint; et l'on ne réussissait pas à raccorder ces fragments: soudain, l'on en découvre un dernier, plus grand et autour duquel les autres s'organisent. L'on a enfin le vase, qui contint un breuvage savoureux. Peut-être aussi se figure-t-on plus volontiers que l'âme ancienne de la Grèce, éperdue, voyage: elle était à Égine, ce jour-là...

... Dans le même temps et l'année même qu'elle a trois ans et fait le loup, il y a, mais à Paris et à la cour, une jeune fille de dix-neuf ans à peine et qui endure de singuliers tracas. Elle s'appelle Mlle de La Fayette. Elle a été élevée par une mère pieuse et bonne. A quatorze ans, vers 1632, elle est devenue fille d'honneur de la reine. Et puis, peu à peu, non par un élan soudain, mais avec une lenteur pénétrante, elle a séduit le coeur, l'imagination, la confiance du Roi, le mélancolique, rêveur et inquiet Louis XIII, sans le vouloir et sans qu'alors la malice de ses ennemis ou maintenant l'autre malice des chercheurs et curieux puisse découvrir dans son aventure aucune habileté que de parfaite innocence. Le Roi aima son amitié, l'aima timidement et lui accorda une sorte de ferveur jalouse et dangereuse. Il renonça pour elle au sentiment que lui avait inspiré Mlle de Hautefort, très pure aussi, mais plus hardie. Et Mlle de Hautefort était blonde, Mlle de La Fayette était brune. Le Roi causait longuement avec elle, à condition qu'ils ne fussent pas seuls, car il était pusillanime et scrupuleux, sévère à lui-même. A ce moment, le cardinal avait de la difficulté à se maintenir: les partis de la cour lui multipliaient les tourments...
