As a boy he helped with the cattle and horses on the family farm. During the early 1880s he went to Texas, where he stayed for 10 years, spending much of that time driving cattle on the western trails. Although the book is fiction, it is based on Adams's own experiences, and it is considered by many to be literature's best account of cowboy life. Adams was disgusted by the unrealistic cowboy fiction being published in his time; The Log of a Cowboy was his response. It is still in print, and even modern reviewers consider it compelling. The Chicago Herald said: "As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page."

It was a wet, bad year on the Old Western Trail. From Red River north and all along was herd after herd waterbound by high water in the rivers. Our outfit lay over nearly a week on the South Canadian, but we were not alone, for there were five other herds waiting for the river to go down. This river had tumbled over her banks for several days, and the driftwood that was coming down would have made it dangerous swimming for cattle.

From the text: "An hour before daybreak one Christmas morning in the Cherokee Strip, six hundred horses were under saddle awaiting the dawn. It- was a clear, frosty morning that bespoke an equally clear day for the wolf "rodeo." Every cow-camp within striking distance of the Walnut Grove, on the Salt Fork of the Cimarron, was a scene of activity, taxing to the utmost its hospitality to man and horse. There had been a hearty response to the invitation to attend the circle drive-hunt of this well-known shelter of several bands of gray wolves. The cowmen had suffered so severely in time past from this enemy of cattle that the Cherokee Strip Cattle Association had that year offered a bounty of twenty dollars for wolf scalps." Andy Adams has been permanently established in history as the greatest chronicler of the cattle industry in the west and a story teller of the old Trail days.

Tom is a skilled horseman and cattle driver, and he finds work on a ranch owned by a wealthy landowner named John Lovell. Tom quickly becomes a trusted employee and is soon tasked with driving a herd of cattle to a distant market known as ""The Outlet."" Along the way, Tom faces numerous challenges, including dangerous river crossings, hostile Native American tribes, and ruthless bandits. Two orphans face starvation on the prairie of northeastern Kansas during the terrible winter of 1885-86. Dell and Joel Wells, redheads who have barely reached shaving age, are about to abandon their dead father's claim on Beaver Creek because it won't grow crops. Then unexpected events, and a drover seeking aid, allow them a decent chance in life. The Young Cattle Kings shows what happens when experienced enterprise meets youthful energy. The boys develop their own ranch on the Beaver, without capital but with honor. No amount of savvy can entirely prepare them for the risks: cruel winters, rapacious wolf packs, summer droughts, mysterious Texas fever, the shifting circumstances of the cattle trade.

A NARRATIVE OF THE OLD TRAIL DAYS... In 1882, a group of cowboys drives a herd of three thousand cattle along the legendary Great Western Cattle Trail from Brownsville, Texas to Montana. The perils and dangers of the trail, along with the cameraderie and beauty experienced by the cowboys is retold in vivid detail. The novel's author, Andy Adams, drew heavily upon his own experience as a cowboy working the Cattle Trail to give the most authentic account of cowboy life found in literature. The age of this book and the time period in which it is set means that some terms and words would not be considered acceptable for the Twenty First Century.

When I first found employment with Lance Lovelace, a Texas cowman, I had not yet attained my majority, while he was over sixty. Though not a native of Texas, "Uncle Lance" was entitled to be classed among its pioneers, his parents having emigrated from Tennessee along with a party of Stephen F. Austin's colonists in 1821. The colony with which his people reached the state landed at Quintana, at the mouth of the Brazos River, and shared the various hardships that befell all the early Texan settlers, moving inland later to a more healthy locality.

The American Old West is brought to life in The Log of a Cowboy in a significant but fleeting way. Here is where the cowboy gained his notoriety and admiration, and it is via the story's protagonist Tommy Moore that we are made aware of some of the difficulties encountered during the fabled cattle drive. Run-ins with Indian tribes, cattle rustlers, shootouts, and the allure of "good whiskey and bad women" are just a few of the difficulties Moore encounters, all of which are described with that traditional cowboy swagger. The Log of a Cowboy is frequently regarded as a narrative of Andy Adams' own life after twelve years in the saddle, and even though some liberties were taken, it still ranks as one of the most accurate accounts ever written, contributing to the popularization of the lawless and revered Wild West. Through Moore, we discover the inherent intuition of these frontiersmen, the perils of stampedes, and cowboy slang terms like "drifting" and "cutting." Anyone who enjoys the Old West should read this. Shanghai Pierce, a legendary cattleman, is introduced into this fictional universe via Adams' skillful weaving of stories inside stories. The cattle drives are still an integral part of American society, much like the Pony Express.

The demand for a market for the excess cattle of Texas at the end of the Civil War was both urgent and widespread. There had been repeated attempts to find a market, and there is proof that Texas cattle were transported to Illinois in 1857. Forty thousand people were transported inland by train after being transported by water from Cairo, Illinois, to the mouth of the Red River in Louisiana eleven years later. The short path, which was wholly contained within the reservations of the Choctaw and Cherokee Indians, two civilized Indian tribes, made it absolutely practicable. The buffalo and the unconquered, nomadic tribes' homeland was further to the west, making this the sole way to the north. The Texas steer that had been sent to the north overwintered and developed flesh similar to that of its original land, developing into marketable meat. At this time, all eyes were on the newly formed Northwest, which was seen as the nation that would provide a suitable market for cattle. The largest annual drive occurred in 1884 when more than 300 herds of cattle, totaling close to 80,000, crossed the Red River. The push cost millions of dollars and required over 4,000 men and over 35,000 horses to be on the path.

As we continued up the South Fork and its tributaries, passing through Buffalo Gap, which would later become a well-known monument on the Texas and Montana cattle path, there was no shortage of water. Indians attacked us again at Buffalo Gap, and while it was just as fruitless as the first, one of the horse wranglers was wounded by an arrow to the shoulder. Fort Concho, the closest location where medical assistance may be anticipated, was a hundred and twelve miles away from us at that time. There was a chance that a few heads may have gotten away from the Clear Fork range and found their way back to their old stomping grounds, but these would be identifiable by a tally mark that set them apart from those that weren't retrieved for the spring delivery. We endured the slaughter of cattle in isolated and inhospitable locations while the better-class Indians helped to stop the atrocities. Outlets pay the greatest and those sent to market second. The few that did survive were pathetic creatures without ears or tails, and their horns, both root, and base, had been frozen until they drooped in strange directions. The winter of 1885-1886 was the milder of the two, especially in comparison to the previous one.
