  • - Promoting Communal Harmony and Social Integration
    af Ankur Barua
    2.157,95 kr.

Modern Buddhism has become an intrinsic part of a globalized world. With its philosophy of the way of life, it takes special place in human and cultural identity. Buddhism in modern times had already incorporated either other genuine Asian traditions or Western traditions and merged with the socio-cultural backgrounds of many countries across the world. With this background, the researchers explored some Buddhist documents, i.e. literary texts, royal edicts, administrative injunctions in relation to communal harmony and national unity. The evidence from Buddhist texts revealed that Applied Buddhism strongly encourages stability, security and dignity of any nation through peaceful coexistence. Buddhism also stresses the principle of interdependence which is also the foundation of globalization in economic interest. An important truth is that no economic system is value-free. Every system of production and consumption encourages the development of certain values and discourages others. So, it is not possible for economics to be free of values when, in fact, it is rooted in the human mind. The practice of donation or 'giving' is the traditional Buddhist way of redistribution of wealth. Donation is selfless giving. It is giving in the spirit of Non-clinging. Non-clinging is the Wisdom of Insight into the Insubstantiality or Emptiness of all things. The emphasis on Donation and merit-making is the Buddhist contribution to the healthy and uniform economic globalization.

Buddhism views human being as part of nature and if nature is destroyed humanity cannot live, and by abusing nature human being abuses he or herself. Environment may be made pollution free and development can be continued through the Buddhist approach by practicing compassion, interdependence, non-violence, human reverence for nature; by choosing simple life-styles which promote social justice and environmental sustainability for the present and future generations; by emphasizing, within the family and the community, religious values and ethical teachings which urge responsible use of material resources and which ensure just human relationships; by initiating practical activities to prevent pollution, renew forests, protect endangered species, correct climate change and enhance awareness about the global ecological crisis; by opposing and seeking to correct intolerance and injustice within and between different religious communities; by maintaining sustainable development and ecological responsibility; and by multiplying projects involving women and youth, which can be widely imitated and can give satisfying evidence of success in conservation.

The Harvest of Time shuttles between nineteenth-century India and present-day Britain, as friendships and loyalties between an eclectic group of individuals are continually put to test. Along these transnational trajectories, self and other become entangled as they try to forge their distinctive identities and speak in their own voices. Amos Goldstein, a young student at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, takes a trip to India to retrace the footsteps of his Uncle Zachariah, hoping to discover what he thinks is going to lead him to the centre of his own being. He finds himself in a room where his uncle might have spent some time, almost a century ago, and also in the arms of Nilanjana, a Ph.D. student at Chicago. This love will take him into the deep jungles of Chattisgarh. From within the heat and dust of the vast hinterlands of India, he hears the whispers of an eloquent silence. Soon, a vow bequeathed by William Hudson to his descendants will be fulfilled.
