  • - A skin of their teeth story of dogged dreams and a freewheeling frontier spirit, as told to Ann Williams by Wayne Payton
    af Ann Williams
    172,95 kr.

The Payton family bore the brunt of their era's meaner twists: the Comstock Laws, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II. None of it kept the seventh of eight Payton kids from relishing his early years in Colorado's Grand Valley. Wayne made a specialty of surviving calamity and forged himself a Crockett caliber boyhood. His explorations broadened when wartime brought family solvency in the form of shipyard jobs at San Francisco Bay but scattered the Payton boys across battlefields from Africa to Asia.

It is hard to define love or even trust to love. The greatest love we need is to love ourselves. We cannot love until we define our own self love. So many of us carry around the baggage of mistrust because someone has broken our heart. Also, the trauma we encounter on our journey can leave us broken and unable to love again. How do we love again or even trust again? I am hoping that in my own challenge to love or trust again, this person who miraculously appear in my life will help me to trust and love again. I hope all that I am seeking will be defined soon, as I ask the question, Is It Me or Is It God?

  • - Plus Helpful Beauties in my Garden
    af Ann Williams

After a career in education - much of it spent working with special needs children -Ann Williams now devotes a large part of her life tending the plants in her garden not far from Pendle in Lancashire. But this talented mother-of-three is also an accomplished artist whose highly imaginative, sometimes quirky, paintings are much in demand. When she lays down her trowel and fork, as likely as not she will then pick up her paintbrushes. But there is a strange irony. Some of the most beautiful plants in her garden (and inside her house) are also poisonous - in some cases, even potentially deadly. Here she explains. It is impossible to know where you are going if you do not know from whence you come. I devised this writing to preserve the knowledge of our genealogy. This book, a collection of my family's oral history given to me by grandmom and years of research, answers the question of where we came from, so that we can better answer the question of where we're going. With the proper knowledge of ourselves, we can tap into our personal greatness, and further the legacy of our bloodline. This task was put on my heart by the God I serve, now I offer this history in service to you. Enjoy!

In 1860 Julia Henderson made her will directing that her slave Rose not be sold like a brute beast, a feeble attempt to atone for the shame she bore for letting tragedy come to Rose's family, sin she would carry to her grave. Julia then decided to keep a memory journal, beginning with childhood when she woke one morning to find her father sobbing, her dead mother cradled in his arms. A slave, with cheerful little Rose in tow, was moved into their home to care for Julia and her brothers. Julia was charmed by Rose, and their half century of near sisterhood began. Rose also began to write a journal; as a child she had learned to write in Julia's "play school." The novel unfolds in the form of those interwoven journals, relating many of their shared experiences, nuanced differently by each writer. Julia adores Rose, abhors slavery, but is oblivious to her own biases. Rose returns Julia's affection with reservations; she detests being property, and having no say-so over her life. The gnarly hands of slavery encumbered them both. Both Julia and Rose were born at the turn of the 19th century on a small farm where slavery, although demeaning, was paternalistic rather than cruel. By 1860 they were living on a large cotton plantation, and writing against a background of unrest, political turmoil, and rumors of impending war. By then cruelty toward slaves, spawned by hate and fear, abounded, and laws supporting the "peculiar institution" had become nearly draconian. The journals, each in its writer's distinctive voice, tell of childhood, marriages, raising children, family separations, and deaths of loved ones. They write about the people in their lives, endearing characters, quirky ones, and some who were purely mean. And how they became tightly bound by childbirths and illness, those special intimacies reserved for women; and how other events devastated Rose, shamed Julia, and nearly broke the trust between them.
