A Fountain Sealed is a novel written by Anne Douglas Sedgwick. The story follows the life of a young woman named Nancy Shallard, who is born into a wealthy family in England during the late 19th century. Despite her privileged upbringing, Nancy feels unfulfilled and restless, longing for something more meaningful in her life. When she meets a young American named John Darrow, Nancy is immediately drawn to him and they soon fall in love. However, their relationship is complicated by the disapproval of Nancy's family and the fact that John is already engaged to another woman. As Nancy struggles to come to terms with her feelings for John and her own sense of identity, she becomes embroiled in a web of secrets and betrayals that threaten to tear her world apart. Along the way, she must confront her own fears and insecurities, as well as the expectations of society and her family.A Fountain Sealed is a powerful and poignant tale of love, loss, and self-discovery, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world. Sedgwick's vivid descriptions of life in turn-of-the-century England and America bring the story to life, while her nuanced portrayal of Nancy's inner turmoil and personal growth make this a compelling read for anyone interested in the human experience.1907. The book begins: In a small drawing-room, whose windows looked out upon a wintry Boston street, three people were sitting. It was a room rather empty and undecorated, but its intense warmth seemed in some degree to furnish it; one couldn't associate austerity with such an almost tropical temperature. There were rows of books on white shelves, a pale Donatello cast on the wall, and two fine bronze vases filled with roses on the mantelpiece. Over the roses hung a portrait in oils, very sleek and very accurate, of a commanding old gentleman in uniform, painted by a well-known German painter, and all about the room were photographs of young women, most of them young mothers, with smooth heads and earnest faces, holding babies. Outside, the snow was heaped high along the pavements and thickly ridged the roofs and lintels. After the blizzard the sun was shining and all the white glittered. The national colors, to a patriotic imagination, were pleasingly represented by the red, white and blue of the brick houses, the snow, and the vivid sky above. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. "COME down to Coldbrooks next week-end, will you, Roger?" said Barney Chadwick. He had been wandering around the room, pausing once to glance at the César Franck on the piano and once at the window to look down at the Thames, and his voice now, though desultory in intention, betrayed to his friend preoccupation and even anxiety. "There is going to be an interesting girl with us: American; very original and charming."

"[...]in her appeal and dignity. She sat in her nurse's arms, her eyes fixed on her great-aunt, and, as Mrs. Delafield held out her hands to her, she unhesitatingly, if unsmilingly, answered, leaning forward to be taken. She was a pale, delicate baby, her narrow little face framed in straightly cut dark hair, her mournful little lips only tinted with a rosy mauve; and, under long, fine brows, her great eyes were full of meditativeness. Rhoda, though now so richly a brunette, had, as a baby, been ruddy-haired and rosy-cheeked, with eyes of a velvety, submerging darkness. Jane Amoret's grey iris rayed out from the expanded pupil like the corolla of a flower.[...]."

"[...] "And she ceased to love him?" He seemed now to interpret the gaze more fully. Did it not foresee? Did it not entreat-though so proudly? "Ah, I don't know. All I know is that she stuck to him, and that she was miserable. Poor, poor child!" Mrs. Mostyn repeated. "And is she dead?" he asked after a little pause in which it seemed to him that they had thrown flowers on a long-forgotten grave. Mrs. Mostyn looked out of the window at the summer sky and sunny garden, the effort of difficult recollection on her face. "I really don't know-I really can't remember. So soon afterward my husband died; Lady Chanfrey died; I came here to live. I heard from time to time of her misfortunes-of her death I don't think I heard; but for years now I have heard nothing. How many years ago is it? This is '95, and that was-oh, it must[...]."
