Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope (1863 -1933), was an English novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels but he is remembered predominantly for only two books: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works, "minor classics" of English literature, are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance, works set in fictional European locales similar to the novels. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, most notably the 1937 Hollywood movie of the same name. In this book: The Prisoner of Zenda Rupert of Hentzau The Secret of the Tower

"[...] "Beyond belief. Did you used to be?" "Just at first. I soon got over it. But they say one oughtn't to get over it. Oh, you've heard the stories about big men, haven't you? Anyhow some men never do. Why, I've sat behind Huntley and seen his hand tremble like our old friend the aspen leaf-and that when he was Attorney-General!" "Lord!" was Arthur's despairing comment; because a malady which did not spare an Attorney-General must surely be unconquerable by lesser folk. "But I expect it's not quite the same sort," Norton Ward went on, smiling. "It's rather like falling in love, I expect. A man's excited every time he falls in love, but I don't think it's the same sort of excitement as he suffers when he falls in love for the first time-I mean badly." Now the last word of this observation so struck Arthur that he forgot all[...]."

In the garden the question was settled without serious difference of opinion. If Sir Robert Perry really could not go on-and Lady Eynesford was by no means prepared to concede even that-then Mr. Puttock, bourgeois as he was, or Mr. Coxon, conceited and priggish though he might be, must come in. At any rate, the one indisputable fact was the impossibility of Mr. Medland: this was, to Lady Eynesford's mind, axiomatic, and, in the safe privacy of her family circle (for Miss Scaife counted as one of the family, and Captain Heseltine and Mr. Flemyng did not count at all), she went so far as to declare that, let the Governor do as he would (in the inconceivable case of his being so foolish as to do anything of the kind), she at least would not receive Mr. Medland. Having launched this hypothetical thunderbolt, she asked Alicia Derosne to give her another cup of tea. Alicia poured out the tea, handed it to her sister-in-law, and asked, "But, Mary, what is there so dreadful about Mr. Medland?"

A Man of Mark is a novel written by Anthony Hope. The story is set in the fictional European country of Aureataland, where the protagonist, George Uvill, arrives as a tourist. However, he soon finds himself embroiled in a political conspiracy that threatens to overthrow the government of the country. George's involvement in the plot leads him to meet a variety of characters, including the beautiful Princess Ottilie, who becomes his love interest. As the story unfolds, George's loyalties are tested, and he must decide whether to side with the conspirators or the government. A Man of Mark is a gripping tale of political intrigue, romance, and adventure, and it offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of early 20th-century Europe.1895. Hope was a barrister who gave up the law after the success of his novel The Prisoner of Zenda. This book begins: In the year 1884 the Republic of Aureataland was certainly not in a flourishing condition. Although most happily situated (it lies on the coast of South America, rather to the north-I mustn't be more definite), and gifted with an extensive territory, nearly as big as Yorkshire, it had yet failed to make that material progress which had been hoped by its founders. It is true that the state was still in its infancy, being an offshoot from another and larger realm, and having obtained the boon of freedom and self-government only as recently has 1871, after a series of political convulsions of a violent character, which may be studied with advantage in the well-known history of The Making of Aureataland, by a learned professor of the Jeremiah P. Jecks University in the United States of America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Although among his more recent writings, the author of The Dolly Dialogues has done some rather serious and careful work, there is no exaggeration in saying that in literarv technique and human interest and the various other qualities that go to make good fiction The Great Miss Driver is easily the biggest, best rounded, and altogether worthiest story he has ever written, and yet, the first thing you are apt to think of is that the germ idea of the story goes straight back to the Dolly Dialogues; that in a superficial way, yes and perhaps in a deeper way, too, there is a certain rather absurd similarity between them; just as though the author, having once made a pleasant little comedy out of a certain situation, had ever since been turning over in his mind the possibility of using it in a bigger and more serious way, until eventually he evolved the present volume.

"Perhaps you won't believe me," said I, "but till yesterday I never so much as heard of her existence." "I've not the least difficulty in believing you. That was old Nick's way. It wasn't your business-was it?-so he didn't talk to you about it. On the other hand, when a thing was your business-that's to say, when he wanted your services-he told you all about it. But I believe I'm the only person he did tell. I'm sure he didn't tell a soul down in Catsford. Finely put about they'll be!"

For tales and legends gather round his name thick as the berries hang on a bush, and with the passage of every succeeding year it grows harder to discern where truth lies and where the love of wonder, working together with the sway of a great man's memory, has wrought the embroidery of its fancy on the plain robe of fact. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
