Ambientato nella fulgida borghesia fiorentina di quegli stessi anni, esso segue da vicino le sorti di Vico Floriani, giovane disincantato ma perdutamente invaghito di Albina Cerignoli. Le ragioni per cui tale unione non si possa concretizzare sono tutte lì, messe nero su bianco dal grande Barrili, e sarebbe un peccato anticiparle: vi basti sapere di avere per le mani uno dei romanzi più struggenti e innovativi dell’Ottocento italiano.Anton Giulio Barrili (1836-1908) nasce a Savona. Laureatosi in Lettere e Filosofia a Genova, nel 1859 si arruola volontario nell’esercito piemontese, partecipando a varie campagne militari al seguito di Garibaldi. Nel corso della sua vita, segnata dall’esperienza risorgimentale, fonda due riviste (L’occhialetto e Il Caffaro) e collabora come redattore al San Giorgio. Assume inoltre la direzione delle riviste Il Movimento (1860) e La Domenica Letteraria (1884). È stato autore di poesia e di commedie, firmando inoltre una cinquantina di romanzi.

Facile è lo inventare, e ci si mette quanto a dir male del prossimo; difficilissimo, poi, dare alle sue invenzioni la evidenza del vero, lumeggiarle con quei tocchi di pennello che le fanno balzar quasi dalla tela. I fatti, per tal guisa affastellati, si tengono ritti per miracolo; i caratteri, dipinti di maniera, non istanno nè in riga nè in spazio; gli è insomma un guazzabuglio, il quale non mette nulla in rilievo, nulla, se non forse la tracotanza dell'autore.
