Por medio de la personificación estos animales hablan sobre las experiencias en sus lugares naturales y la transición al zoológico donde ahora viven enjaulados y su relación con los seres humanos. Algunos cuentan cómo vivían antes de ser atrapados y suponemos que fueron capturados para ser vendidos a los zoológicos en diferentes partes del mundo, y para emparejarlos con otros que ya se encontraban cautivos. La personificación de estos animales funciona bien porque podemos ver el daño físico pero también psicológico. Son testigos en primera persona al ver que sus padres, hermanos y amigos pasan por muchas dificultades para defenderse de ser capturados y trasladados a lugares desconocidos lejos de sus familias. Through the art of personification, these animals talk about their experiences in their natural habitats and their transition to a zoo where they now live as captives, and about their relationships with humans. Some describe how they lived before being captured, and the assumption is that they were captured to be sold to zoos in various parts of the world, and to pair them up with other similar animals that were already confined. Personification of these animals is effective because we can see both the physical and emotional harm. They are first person witnesses when they see their parents, brothers, sisters, and friends' hardships to defend themselves from being captured and transported to unknown places far from their families.

El cuento de la manzana / The Story of the Apple Elsa va caminando por el zoológico acompañada de un grupo de niños y su niñera. Cuando se acercan a la jaula de los pájaros exóticos, Elsa se distrae y se separa del grupo cuando escucha la voz de un papagayo que está muy molesto porque otro pájaro, aprovechando un descuido, ha mordido su manzana que un niño le había lanzado a la jaula. El papagayo está muy frustrado porque nadie le quiere decir quién mordió su manzana, y parece que sólo quieren burlarse de él y hacerle pasar un mal rato. Elsa está fascinada escuchando a los pájaros discutir entre ellos y viendo cómo resuelven sus problemas. Elsa is walking with a group of children and their nanny in the zoo. When they approach the cage with exotic birds, Elsa gets distracted and separated from the group when she hears a macaw complaining about another bird, who took advantage of an oversight, and bit his apple that a boy threw into the cage. The macaw is very frustrated because nobody wants to tell him who bit his apple, and it seems that they want to give him a hard time and make fun of him. Elsa is fascinated listening to the birds discuss among themselves and how they try to solve their problems. El cuento del canguro / The Story of the Kangaroo En otro incidente en el mismo zoológico, Elsa también se distrae y se separa de la niñera y de los niños, y termina cerca del espacio donde viven los canguros. La mamá canguro lleva a su bebé en su bolsa, y ambos empiezan a hablar con Elsa de manera amistosa. Elsa demuestra interés en los canguros y su vida en el campo australiano. Ambos le cuentan de sus aventuras, sufrimiento, y cómo fueron cazados, capturados, y finalmente traídos al zoológico. In another incident in the same zoo, Elsa also gets distracted and separated from the nanny and the children and ends up near the kangaroo area. The mother kangaroo is carrying her baby in her pouch, and both begin talking to Elsa in a friendly manner. Elsa is interested in the kangaroos and their lives in the Australian Bush. They tell her about their adventures, hardships, and how they were hunted, captured, and brought to the zoo.

La bella violinista y cuatro cuentos más es una colección de 5 cuentos para niños, todos originalmente publicados en español en el periódico La Prensa de San Antonio, Texas en la década de los 1920. La bella violinista es una niña adolescente que toca magistralmente el violín y, en vez de hacerse rica con su talento, lo usa para tocar en las calles de su pueblo. Los fondos que recauda en la calle los reparte personalmente a la gente más necesitada. Una niña mimada es el siguiente cuento y trata sobre una niña que nace enferma, pero que recupera la salud mientras va creciendo. Cuando está enferma sus padres la miman tanto que a través del tiempo la niña, y luego de adolescente, se acostumbra a ser la que manda en su casa, sin tener consideración por todos los que la rodean. Los otros tres cuentos son Un robo descubierto con delicadeza por el Rey Alfonso de Aragón, Leo y Nica, y El Lobo bueno. The Beautiful Girl with the Violin and Four Other Stories is a collection of five stories for children, all originally published in the Spanish language newspaper La Prensa in San Antonio, Texas in the 1920's. The beautiful girl with the violin tells the story of an adolescent girl who is a master violin player and, instead of using her talent to become rich, she plays in the street corners of her town. The money that she collects she personally distributes among the needy. A Spoiled Girl is the next story, and it's about a girl who is sick when she's born, but she regains her health as she grows up. When she is sick, her parents spoil her to the point that, as an adolescent, she is the one who tells everyone what to do around the house, without having any consideration for anyone in her surroundings. The other three stories are A Robbery delicately Resolved by King Alfonso of Aragón, Leo and Nica, and The Good Wolf.

The boy was eight years old, an orphan and always hungry. When his mother died, he went to live with his grandfather who didn't treat him well. To forget about his bad fortune, and to get away from his grandfather, he went for walks in the small town away from the slum where he lived. Hoping to find something to eat, he looked through display windows in stores, butcher shops, and restaurants, but no one gave him anything. One day he was in front of a candy shop and he saw many kinds of delicious and colorful candy. But something caught his attention: a paper cone filled with sugar covered almonds which became his obsession, to the point that he had dreams about it.
