Enoch Arnold Bennett (always known as Arnold Bennett) was one of the most remarkable literary figures of his time, a product of the English Potteries that he made famous as the Five Towns. In his time he turned his hand to every kind of writing, but he will be remembered for such novels as The Old Wives' Tale, the Clayhanger trilogy (Clayhanger, Hilda Lessways, and These Twain), and The Card. This edition focus on the first and best-known book volume Clayhanger. Set in the late 19th century in a drab potters' town in the industrial Midlands, Clayhanger begins the story of Edwin Clayhanger as he is attempting to wrest control of his life from his tyrannical and pragmatic father. Repressed and shy, he falls in love with Hilda Lessways, a forthright young woman who, despite her attraction to Edwin, marries another man. After many years he finds her living a broken, destitute life, her husband imprisoned for bigamy and her child thus considered illegitimate. In spite of all, Clayhanger still loves Hilda.

The Pretty Lady is a novel written by Arnold Bennett, first published in 1918. Set in London during World War I, it tells the story of a French woman named Christine who works as a prostitute in the city's West End. After being rescued from an abusive client by a wealthy gentleman named Ferdinand, Christine is taken under his wing and given a new identity as a respectable lady. As she navigates her new life, Christine must confront the prejudices and societal expectations that come with her new status. Meanwhile, Ferdinand must grapple with his own feelings for Christine and the challenges of being a wealthy man in a time of war.The novel explores themes of class, gender, and morality, and offers a nuanced portrait of a woman struggling to find her place in a rapidly changing world. With its vivid depictions of wartime London and its complex characters, The Pretty Lady remains a compelling read over a century after its initial publication.1918. Arnold Bennett was an English novelist, playwright, essayist, critic and journalist. By any standards, his output was prolific: thirty novels, almost three thousand articles, ten plays and many other writings. He was a bon viveur who enjoyed to the full the fruits of his hard work, his success and the acclaim accorded him. The Pretty Lady is considered to be one of Bennetts most revealing, and underrated works. Some believe he may have done field research for this book and in it he resolutely expresses his horror of the levity of those whom he saw up close in wartime. The Card is a short comic novel written by Arnold Bennett in 1911. Like much of Bennett's best work, it is set in the Potteries District of Staffordshire. It chronicles the rise of Edward Henry ("Denry") Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of Bursley (a fictitious town based on Burslem). This is accomplished through luck, initiative and a fair bit of chutzpah (in slang a card is a 'character', an 'original'; a clever, audacious, person).

When Edward Henry Machin first saw the smoke on May 27, 1867-the very day of Bennett's own birth. At age 12, Denry begins his career by altering his marks in a test sufficiently to earn him a scholarship to grammar school. At 16, he leaves school to work for Mr Duncalf, the town clerk and a solicitor. Duncalf is responsible for organizing an exclusive ball; Denry "invites" himself, then also a few others in exchange for things he will need, such as lessons from dance instructor Ruth Earp. On a bet, he audaciously asks the energetic, beautiful Countess of Chell to dance. Everyone, including Machin, is in awe of the Countess and he thus earns himself the reputation of a "card" (a "character", someone able to set tongues wagging) - a reputation he is determined to cement.

  • - How to Form It. (1909) by: Arnold Bennett
    af Arnold Bennett
    72,95 - 107,95 kr.

Literary Taste: How to Form it is a long essay by Arnold Bennett, first published in 1909, with a revised edition by his friend Frank Swinnerton appearing in 1937. It includes a long list of recommended books, every item individually costed. Both the essay and the list were very influential, although Bennett's decision to include only books originally written in English (along with a handful of Latin works) makes it extremely insular compared with most other attempts at compiling a literary canon.

I have never seen a reasonably good all-round performance of grand opera. Nevertheless, though not a melomaniac, I am extremely fond of grand opera, and have seen it in the following cities: Antwerp, Brussels, Florence, Ghent, Hanley, Lisbon, London, Milan, New York, Paris, Ostend, Philadelphia, Rome, San Remo, and others which I cannot recall. If operatic performances succeed in several particulars, as they sometimes do-though rarely in more than one-they always fail in at least one particular, generally in several, sometimes in all. The best show I ever saw anywhere on the operatic stage was a performance of Le Mariage de Figaro in English at Drury Lane under Sir Thomas Beecham. The production had been superintended by Nigel Playfair. The translation was quite neat, and often very witty indeed. The acting was good. There was an ensemble. The scenery was not really good, but it was so immensely better than ordinary scenery in world-renowned opera-houses that it gave the illusion of being good. I was as well satisfied by this affair as by a faulty performance of Strauss's absolutely enchanting Rosenkavalier at Covent Garden: which is saying a great deal. It would be impossible for me to decide which was the worst show I ever saw-the choice would be too embarrassing. But it occurred certainly in either Paris, Milan, or London. I know that after a performance of Siegfried, at the Paris Opera House I took an oath never again to enter the Paris Opera House.
