    " Nous sommes, je crois bien, les seuls survivants de l'époque radieuse du romantisme (1830-1848). Je te dédie ces pages, les dernières sans doute que j'écrirai, à toi qui fus une des plus charmantes figures du bataillon sacré. Tu as illustré les Contes d'Hoffmann, toi qui contais si bien les contes romantiques. C'est toi qui le premier as eu l'idée de vivre en phalanstère dans le vieux Paris devant le Louvre, dans ce vieil hôtel bien digne de nous abriter tous. Nous l'avons d'ailleurs illustré de peintures plus ou moins étranges où chacun de nous marquait son style. C'était d'ailleurs le style Renaissance et non le style moyen âge qui dominait. Il y avait bien aussi, grâce à toi, le style orientaliste. Je vois encore ta Cléopâtre dont j'étais amoureux. Tout cela était peint sur des panneaux appartenant au propriétaire; il nous a fallu tout abandonner en abandonnant l'hôtel. Que ne donnerais-je, aujourd'hui, pour retrouver ces peintures ! Gérard de Nerval, orientaliste comme toi, s'est risqué à emporter ta Cléopâtre. Te souviens-tu que, par le hasard des choses, tu as retrouvé Gérard de Nerval à Thèbes ? Moi, je l'avais retrouvé à Venise, s'embarquant pour Constantinople. C'en était donc fait du Phalanstère. Pétrus Borel voyagea aussi. Notre pauvre ami est mort de faim dans les sables du désert. Édouard Ourliac n'alla que jusqu'à Rome où, grâce à l'itinéraire chrétien de Louis Veuillot, il retrouva Dieu qu'il avait d'abord renié..."
