Je te dédie ces pages, les dernières sans doute que j'écrirai, à toi qui fus une des plus charmantes figures du bataillon sacré. Il y avait bien aussi, grâce à toi, le style orientaliste. Je vois encore ta Cléopâtre dont j'étais amoureux. Tout cela était peint sur des panneaux appartenant au propriétaire; il nous a fallu tout abandonner en abandonnant l'hôtel. Que ne donnerais-je, aujourd'hui, pour retrouver ces peintures ! Gérard de Nerval, orientaliste comme toi, s'est risqué à emporter ta Cléopâtre. Te souviens-tu que, par le hasard des choses, tu as retrouvé Gérard de Nerval à Thèbes ? Moi, je l'avais retrouvé à Venise, s'embarquant pour Constantinople. C'en était donc fait du Phalanstère. Pétrus Borel voyagea aussi. Notre pauvre ami est mort de faim dans les sables du désert. Édouard Ourliac n'alla que jusqu'à Rome où, grâce à l'itinéraire chrétien de Louis Veuillot, il retrouva Dieu qu'il avait d'abord renié..."

" Dans l'histoire de la peinture en France aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, on voit deux écoles ou plutôt deux familles de peintres se produire presque en même temps et régner tour à tour: l'une grande et forte, qui puise sa vie dans les saintes inspirations de Dieu et de la nature, qui embellit encore la beauté humaine par le souvenir du ciel et la lumière de l'idéal; l'autre gracieuse et coquette, qui n'attend pas l'inspiration, qui se contente d'être jolie, de sourire, de charmer même aux dépens de la vérité et de la grandeur. On peut donc s'étonner de prime-abord de trouver le berceau et la tombe de Jacques Callot dans cette nature douce et souriante. Est-ce donc là qu'il voyait ses capitans, ses matamores, ses sorciers, ses bohémiens, toute cette galerie splendide des curiosités humaines ? En étudiant la vie de Jacques Callot dès son enfance, je vais découvrir à coup sûr à quel heureux hasard il a dû son génie..."
