"I think you, are wrong," he replied; "there are still, depend upon it, quaint, undiscovered countries and continents of strange extent. Ah, Miss Lally! believe me, we stand amidst sacraments and mysteries full of awe, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be. Life, believe me, is no simple thing, no mass of grey matter and congeries of veins and muscles to be laid naked by the surgeon's knife; man is the secret which I am about to explore.

A discussion between two men on the nature of evil leads one of them to reveal a mysterious Green Book he possesses. It is a young girl's diary, in which she describes in ingenuous, evocative prose her strange impressions of the countryside in which she lives as well as conversations with her nurse, who initiates her into a secret world of folklore and black magic. Throughout, the girl makes cryptic allusions to such topics as "nymphs", "Dôls", "voolas," "white, green, and scarlet ceremonies", "Aklo letters", the "Xu" and "Chian" languages, "Mao games", and a game called "Troy Town" (the last of which is a reference to actual practices involving labyrinths or labyrinthine dances)

"And Mr. Joseph Walters is going to stay the night?" said the smooth clean-shaven man to his companion, an individual not of the most charming appearance, who had chosen to make his ginger-colored mustache merge into a pair of short chin-whiskers. The two stood at the hall door, grinning evilly at each other; and presently a girl ran quickly down, the stairs, and joined them. She was quite young, with a quaint and piquant rather than a beautiful face, and her eyes were of a shining hazel. She held a neat paper parcel in one hand, and laughed with her friends. "Leave the door open," said the smooth man to the other, as they were going out. "Yes, by--," he went on with an ugly oath. "We'll leave the front door on the jar. He may like to see company, you know."

The Great God Pan" is a novella written by Arthur Machen. A version of the story was published in the magazine Whirlwind in 1890, and Machen revised and extended it for its book publication (together with another story, "The Inmost Light") in 1894. On publication it was widely denounced by the press as degenerate and horrific because of its decadent style and sexual content, although it has since garnered a reputation as a classic of horror. Machen's story was only one of many at the time to focus on Pan as a useful symbol for the power of nature and paganism. The title was taken from the poem "A Musical Instrument" published in 1862 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, in which the first line of every stanza ends "... the great god Pan.

An ancient Roman hilltop fort proves an irresistible draw to Lucian Taylor, but what awaits at the top isn¿t just a view of the surrounding Welsh landscape but a bacchal experience his young soul isn¿t ready for. This experience sets his path as he attempts to transcribe his increasingly elaborate visions into the perfect book; the book that will actually mean something more than the banal novels he sees the publishing houses push out.The Hill of Dreams is a semi-autobiographical work, with Arthur Machen following a similar physical journey to the novel: a childhood in rural Wales followed by attempts to become an author in London. Machen was inspired by a review of Tristram Shandy that described it as ¿a picaresque of the mind,¿ and determined to write ¿a Robinson Crusoe of the soul.¿ The protagonist¿s isolation from the rest of society certainly resonates with that description.Machen wrote this ten years earlier than its original 1907 publication, it having been turned down by the publishers of the time. While it was mostly ignored on its initial release, it has picked up admirers over the years and is now viewed as one of Machen¿s most important works.

Two idlers in London are sauntering in the streets when they pick up a coin dropped by a fleeing man. They keep meeting three persons, each time in a different disguise, who recount lurid tales. They seem to be looking for a spectacled man who regrets working with them, and has run away with a valuable coin ¿This novel is a Gothic horror classic, and takes the form of an episodic novel, with each chapter containing a story recounted by one of the three impostors. It contains ¿Novel of the Black Seal¿ and ¿Novel of the White Powder,¿ popular stories which have been widely anthologized.

Was Ambrose Meyrick insane or born in the wrong millennium?A Welsh orphan, he went to live with his uncle at a public school in the industrialized midlands, where he was seen as a lazy, idle, unrealistic and impractical dreamer. So he was caned by the teachers, bullied by his classmates, and bored by his classes. His father, before his death, had developed an enthusiasm in him for antiquities, especially the ancient Celtic branch of Christianity, taking him to desolate places in Wales, to the remnants of saint's wells and ruins of ancient buildings and holy sites, telling him stories of them and the saints and heroes of an almost forgotten era. But his father told him to conceal his interests from the world, which would not understand.Ambrose found out the hard way that his father had been right, and that he had to hide this fascination in order to conform to the expectations of his classmates and teachers. After all, they would never believe that he had seen the Holy Grail. And the school and its teachers had no interest in developing a mystic. He became a model student and athlete, and got admitted to Oxford. Meanwhile, at night he meditated and had dreams and visions. His uncle's young Irish maid, also an orphan, developed an interest in him, although she had doubts about his sanity. A couple of chance encounters with strangers suggested that he has a destiny of being an unappreciated outsider and a martyr. He eventually rebelled against the hypocrisy around him, but then discovered that he, too, had been a hypocrite, and must change himself.
