Else T., Tochter eines Wiener Rechtsanwalts, befindet sich für einige Urlaubstage im Südtiroler Kurort San Martino di Castrozza. Dort bekommt sie einen Express-Brief ihrer Mutter, in welchem die Bitte an sie herangetragen wird, den reichen Kunsthändler Dorsday um ein dringend benötigtes Darlehen zu bitten, da Elses Vater Mündelgelder veruntreut habe und kurz vor der Verhaftung stehe. Else geht auf Dorsday zu und schildert ihm die schwierige familiäre Lage. Dorsday willigt zwar ein, die notwendigen 30.000 Gulden zur Verfügung zu stellen, fordert aber als Gegenwert die Erlaubnis, Else nackt betrachten zu dürfen...

Georg von Wergenthin saß heute ganz allein bei Tische. Felician, sein älterer Bruder, hatte es vorgezogen, nach längerer Zeit wieder einmal mit Freunden zu speisen. Aber Georg verspürte noch keine besondere Neigung, Ralph Skelton, den Grafen Schönstein, oder andere von den jungen Leuten wiederzusehen, mit denen er sonst gern plauderte; er fühlte sich vorläufig zu keiner Art von Geselligkeit aufgelegt. Der Diener räumte ab und verschwand. Georg zündete sich eine Zigarette an, dann ging er nach seiner Gewohnheit in dem großen, dreifenstrigen, nicht sehr hohen Zimmer hin und her und wunderte sich, wie dieser Raum, der ihm durch viele Wochen wie verdüstert erschienen war, allmählich doch das frühere freundliche Aussehen wiederzugewinnen begann. Unwillkürlich ließ er seinen Blick auf dem leeren Sessel am oberen Tischende ruhen, über den durch das offene Mittelfenster die Septembersonne hinfloß, und es war ihm, als hätte er seinen Vater, der seit zwei Monaten tot war, noch vor einer Stunde dort sitzen gesehen; so deutlich stand ihm jede, selbst die kleinste Gebärde des Verstorbenen vor Augen, bis zu seiner Art die Kaffeetasse fortzurücken, den Zwicker aufzusetzen, in einer Broschüre zu blättern. Georg dachte an eines der letzten Gespräche mit dem Vater, das im Spätfrühling stattgefunden hatte, kurz vor der Übersiedlung in die Villa am Veldeser See.

Casanovas Heimfahrt ist eine Novelle von Arthur Schnitzler, die im Sommer 1918 in der Literaturzeitschrift Die neue Rundschau in Berlin erschien. 1778, in seinem 53. Lebensjahr, wartet Casanova in Mantua auf ein Zeichen aus Venedig: Der Rat der Zehn soll die 25-jährige Verbannung des inzwischen verarmten Venezianers aus der Vaterstadt beenden. Während des Wartens trifft Casanova seinen im bescheidenen Wohlstand lebenden Freund Olivo. Mit dessen Gattin Amalia, nun Mutter von drei jungen Mädchen, hatte Casanova einst eine Affäre. Amalia liebt Casanova immer noch und will die Affäre wieder aufleben lassen. Casanova möchte aber die junge Marcolina, eine blutjunge Nichte Olivos, verführen.

Arthur Schnitzler (15 May 1862 - 21 October 1931) was an Austrian author and dramatist.Arthur Schnitzler was born at Praterstrasse 16, Leopoldstadt, Vienna, capital of the Austrian Empire (as of 1867, part of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary). He was the son of a prominent Hungarian laryngologist, Johann Schnitzler (1835-1893), and Luise Markbreiter (1838-1911), a daughter of the Viennese doctor Philipp Markbreiter. His parents were both from Jewish families. In 1879 Schnitzler began studying medicine at the University of Vienna and in 1885 he received his doctorate of medicine. He began work at Vienna's General Hospital (German: Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Stadt Wien), but ultimately abandoned the practice of medicine in favour of writing.
