The World as Will and Idea [Representation] (German: Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung) is the central work of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, published here, as in the original English translation, in 3 volumes. The main body of the work states at the beginning that it assumes prior knowledge of Immanuel Kant's theories (see his "Critique of Pure Reason" ISBN: 9781537260051). Schopenhauer recommended that the student begin with the final Appendix (found in volume 3), titled "On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason" before the rest of the book. The first volume contains four Books, two on "The World as Will" and two on "The World as Idea," while the second and third volumes contain Supplementary material to each of the four books. The second volume also opens with an appendix to the four books, titled "Critique of the Kantian Philosophy," in which Schopenhauer rejects most of Kant's ethics and significant parts of his epistemology and aesthetics.

Arthur Schopenhauer (Danzig, February 22, 1788-Frankfurt, Kingdom of Prussia, September 21, 1860) was a German philosopher. Its philosophy, conceived essentially as a "think to the end" philosophy of Kant, Plato and is indebted to Spinoza, also serving as a bridge with Eastern philosophy, especially Buddhism, Taoism and vedanta.1 In his work later, from 1836, he presents his philosophy in open polemic against post-Kantian metaphysical developments of his contemporaries.

Nor can Schopenhauer's opinions fail to be of special value when he treats of literary form and method. For, quite apart from his philosophical pretensions, he claims recognition as a great writer; he is, indeed, one of the best of the few really excellent prose-writers of whom Germany can boast. While he is thus particularly qualified to speak of Literature as an Art, he has also something to say upon those influences which, outside of his own merits, contribute so much to an author's success, and are so often undervalued when he obtains immediate popularity. Schopenhauer's own sore experiences in the matter of reputation lend an interest to his remarks upon that subject, although it is too much to ask of human nature that he should approach it in any dispassionate spirit. Eristische Dialektik oder die Kunst, Recht zu behaltenist der Name eines um 1830 entstandenen Manuskripts von Arthur Schopenhauer, in dem er als Eristik oder Eristische Dialektik eine Kunstlehre beschreibt, um in einem Disput als derjenige zu erscheinen, der sich im Recht befindet. Zu diesem Zweck gibt er 38 rhetorische Strategeme an, die also nicht der Wahrheitsfindung dienen, sondern dem Erfolg in einem Streitgespräch durch bestimmte argumentative Formen. Diesen Zweck haben auch klassische Sophismen. Einige davon werden von Schopenhauer ebenfalls aufgeführt. Er erwähnt das Manuskript 1851 in Parerga und Paralipomena. PRELIMINARY. When Schopenhauer was asked where he wished to be buried, he answered, "Anywhere; they will find me;" and the stone that marks his grave at Frankfort bears merely the inscription "Arthur Schopenhauer," without even the date of his birth or death. Schopenhauer, the pessimist, had a sufficiently optimistic conviction that his message to the world would ultimately be listened to--a conviction that never failed him during a lifetime of disappointments, of neglect in quarters where perhaps he would have most cherished appreciation; a conviction that only showed some signs of being justified a few years before his death. Schopenhauer was no opportunist; he was not even conciliatory; he never hesitated to declare his own faith in himself, in his principles, in his philosophy; he did not ask to be listened to as a matter of courtesy but as a right--a right for which he would struggle, for which he fought, and which has in the course of time, it may be admitted, been conceded to him. Although everything that Schopenhauer wrote was written more or less as evidence to support his main philosophical thesis, his unifying philosophical principle, the essays in this volume have an interest, if not altogether apart, at least of a sufficiently independent interest to enable them to be considered on their own merits, without relation to his main idea. And in dissociating them, if one may do so for a moment (their author would have scarcely permitted it!), one feels that one enters a field of criticism in which opinions can scarcely vary. So far as his philosophy is concerned, this unanimity does not exist; he is one of the best abused amongst philosophers; he has many times been explained and condemned exhaustively, and no doubt this will be as many times repeated. What the trend of his underlying philosophical principal was, his metaphysical explanation of the world, is indicated in almost all the following essays, but chiefly in the "Metaphysics of Love," to which the reader may be referred. These essays are a valuable criticism of life by a man who had a wide experience of life, a man of the world, who possessed an almost inspired faculty of observation. Schopenhauer, of all men, unmistakably observed....

He is best known for his 1818 work The World as Will and Representation (expanded in 1844), wherein he characterizes the phenomenal world as the product of a blind and insatiable metaphysical will. Proceeding from the transcendental idealism of Immanuel Kant, Schopenhauer developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that has been described as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism, rejecting the contemporaneous post-Kantian philosophies of German idealism. Schopenhauer was among the first thinkers in Western philosophy to share and affirm significant tenets of Eastern philosophy (e.g., asceticism, the world-as-appearance), having initially arrived at similar conclusions as the result of his own philosophical work. Though his work failed to garner substantial attention during his life, Schopenhauer has had a posthumous impact across various disciplines, including philosophy, literature, and science.
