‘100 Quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer: Great Philosophers & Their Inspiring Thoughts’ is a cherry-picked collection of some of Schopenhauer’s most incisive and pertinent observations. With many dealing with the relationship between art and philosophy, this is a superb read for artists and philosophers alike. While many of his proposals steer towards melancholy and sombreness, they’re always shot through with his dry sense of humour. A superb addition to any library or coffee table.Known as the ‘artist’s philosopher,’ Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) was born in Danzig. At the University of Göttingen, he became aware of the Age of Enlightenment movement and the philosophers Plato and Immanuel Kant. After the death of his father, Schopenhauer lived in Weimar, where he befriended the noted playwright, poet, and novelist, Wolfgang von Goethe. Their many discussions on the nature of art and philosophy laid the groundwork for many of Schopenhauer’s later works. After a stint working for the ‘Dresden Evening Newspaper,’ he focused on his most famous work, ‘The World as Will and Idea.’
While we tend to think of the great thinkers as hailing from Ancient Greece, the 19th century has had more than its fair share of sharp minds.‘400 Quotations from the Great Philosophers of the 19th Century’ is a collection of reflections, insights, and observations from some of the best brains of that era. A superb book for dipping in and out of, this makes a great gift for anyone with an interest in history or philosophy.Søren Kierkegaard (1813 – 1855) was born in Copenhagen. He is considered to be one of the founders of existential philosophy and wrote many books on religion, ethics, morality, and philosophy. Born in Poland, Arthur Schopenhauer (1788 – 1860) was one of the first philosophers to combine elements of Indian philosophy and Western philosophy, in his pursuit of transcendental idealism.Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 – 1900) is regarded as one of the 19th-century philosophers to have had a lasting effect on contemporary philosophy. Born in Germany, he wrote 14 books on subjects such as cultural criticism, and poetry. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) was an American philosopher, and poet, who led the American transcendentalist movement during the 1800s.

In the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, a misanthropic and pessimistic thinker reviled for his bitter invective, the reader will not find candid thoughts which peacefully accompany the passing of days. However, he will be mistaken if he looks for in the author only a bitter vision of life, harsh diagnoses about the times he lived in, or even, ultimately, an exhortation to suicide. As this selection of texts, by Ernst Ziegler, shows, what springs from his thoughts is the conviction that we must start living anew every day, since it is an art to stay alive.
