On May Day the feathered folk in Pleasant Valley began to stop, look and listen. They were expecting somebody. "Have you seen him?" Rusty Wren asked Jolly Robin. Jolly Robin said that he hadn't; but he added that he was on the lookout. "Have you heard his song?" little Mr. Chippy inquired eagerly of Mr. Blackbird.

One day, when Johnnie Green tramped over the fields toward the woods, he did not dream that he walked right over somebody's bedroom. The snow was deep, for it was midwinter. And as Johnnie crossed his father's pasture he thought only of the fresh rabbit tracks that he saw all about him. He had no way of knowing that beneath the three feet of snow, and as much further below the top of the ground too, there was a snug, cozy little room, where Mr. and Mrs. Woodchuck lay sound asleep on a bed of dried grass.

Now, Rusty Wren had found-and shown to his wife-a hollow apple tree and a hole in a fence-rail, either of which he thought would make a pleasant place in which to live. But since the little couple were house wrens, Rusty's wife said she thought that they oughtn't to be so far from the farmhouse.

At the same time there wasn't anyone in Pleasant Valley that helped Farmer Green more than she did. She tried her hardest to keep the trees in the orchard free from insects.

Part of the project Bedtime-Tales Series of classic literature, this is a new edition of the classic work published in 1916-not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Pen House Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. Jimmy Rabbit wanted a new tail. To be sure, he already had a tail-but it was so short that he felt it was little better than none at all. One of his most admirable qualities was the fact that he never used language that talked down to children; instead, he frequently used words beyond their average vocabulary in an effort to broaden their knowledge. Bailey was a graduate of Harvard. He died on October 17, 1949.

Fatty Coon was so fat and round that he looked like a ball of fur, with a plumelike tail for a handle. But if you looked at him closely you would have seen a pair of very bright eyes watching you. Fatty loved to eat. Yes-he loved eating better than anything else in the world. That was what made him so fat. And that, too, was what led him into many adventures. Close by a swamp, which lay down in the valley, between Blue Mountain and Swift River, Fatty Coon lived with his mother and his brother and his two sisters. Among them all there was what grown people call "a strong family resemblance," which is the same thing as saying that they all looked very much alike. The tail of each one of them-mother and children too-had six black rings around it. Each of them had a dark brown patch of fur across the face, like a mask. And-what do you think?-each of them, even Fatty and his brother and his sisters, had a stiff, white moustache! Of course, though they all looked so much alike, you would have known which was Mrs. Coon, for she was so much bigger than her children. And you would have known which was Fatty-he was so much rounder than his brother and his sisters. Mrs. Coon's home was in the hollow branch of an old tree. It was a giant of a tree-a poplar close by a brook which ran into the swamp-and the branch which was Mrs. Coon's home was as big as most tree-trunks are.

A good many of the forest-people claimed that old Mr. Crow was an outlaw. They said he was always roving about, robbing Farmer Green of his corn and his chickens, and digging up the potatoes when they shot their sprouts above the surface of the potato-patch. And everybody was aware that the old gentleman stole eggs from the nests of his smaller neighbors. It was even whispered that Mr. Crow had been known to devour baby robins.
