Du nord au sud, la nature varie dans la terre de Canaan. Les collines galiléennes n'ont pas les gorges profondes du Liban, où quelque courant d'eau s'est creusé un lit tapissé d'une végétation exubérante; mais elles ont à leur pied et dans leurs flancs des bassins ou plateaux de verdure inconnus dans le midi. On a comparé ces collines à des racines que le mont Hermon, comme un grand et vieux chêne, pousserait au loin vers l'ouest et la mer. Moins riches que le Liban, elles sont cependant bien moins arides et pierreuses que la Judée...
