Vorgestern Abend, als es im Garten so dunkel wurde, dass ich kaum noch etwas sehen konnte, und als meine Fingerspitzen in den dicken Handschuhen schon ganz kalt waren, wollte ich gerade den Schubkarren in den Schuppen stellen, als mir plötzlich ein fleißiges Männchen entgegenkam, dass ebenfalls einen Schubkarren schob, und zwar in Gegenrichtung. Wir waren beide so überrascht über den anderen Nachtarbeiter im Freien, dass wir wie aus einem Munde riefen: »Wie die Heinzelmännchen von Köln.«Tja, das war vorgestern. Diese Begegnung erinnerte mich an die alte Sage von den fleißigen Naturgeistern, die vor langer Zeit, als das Wünschen noch geholfen hat, im Siebengebirge werkelten und den schlafenden Menschen in der Nacht ihre Arbeit verrichteten, bis eines Tages ¿ Ja leider, eines Tages war es plötzlich aus mit den fleißigen Helferlein, denn eine neugierige Schneiderin hatte sie vergrault. Doch der Dichter und Maler August Kopisch wollte verhindern, dass sie völlig in Vergessenheit gerieten. Er goss ihre Geschichte in lebendige Verse gegossen und veröffentlichte 1836 die Ballade über »Die Heinzelmännchen zu Köln«. Ihm zu Ehren wurde in Köln sogar ein »Heinzelmännchenbrunnnen« errichtet.Diese Ausgabe begleitet die Verse von Kopisch mit Bildern von Oskar Herrfurth und Fritz Gareis.
