Sometimes second chances can kill you. From the moment he woke that early March morning, Chase Hampton knew, once he was released from prison later that day, he was never going back. No matter what. Born into a wealthy but flawed North Carolina shipbuilding family, Chase was somehow immune to the dysfunction. The sky was the limit for the 18-year old football prodigy, until one terrible event changed the course of his life and prison became his new home. Through the highs and lows of his incarceration, there was one person he couldn't forget, no matter how hard he'd tried: childhood best friend Bailey Masters. For reasons unknown to him, she'd shunned him ever since her mysterious return to Foggy Harbor at the beginning of their sophomore year. Now, seven years into a twelve-year manslaughter sentence, Chase is given an unusual second chance, one that comes with its own set of rules. Suddenly, he's thrust into a position he's not ready for: the tip of the spear in a quiet war against an American enemy. A war that could cost him his family . . . and his life.

Jake Brigham, a wildly successful first time author is drowning in the undertow of his newfound success. After years of "winning," he realizes he has only lost--a beloved mother, a marriage, even his ability to create. Eventually, he leaves the demands of New York and returns to a place once close to his heart: Arnco, a dying Georgia mill village. He rebuilds his life, and his passion returns, for words, and for a childhood friend. Allie Tanner, a widowed, single mother, has been fighting demons since the day she was born. Her entire life has been a struggle-- with an alcoholic father, her own health problems, the death of her husband, and the constant worry that she may never be able to protect the one thing that means the most: her daughter Grace. Jake ignites the spark of hope within her, and she within him. And each for very different reasons. When circumstances from their past collide with their present, will their hopes survive? Will tragedy cause a horrific breakdown or an inspirational destiny?

"Until the adventure that I am about to relate, I had been a tolerably well-behaved North Carolina boy." In 1914 Ben Muse, then 16 years old and just out of high school, decided he had behaved himself long enough. He left his family home in Durham, North Carolina, and traveled to Mexico City to observe and report on the Mexican Revolution, which was then at its height. While in Mexico he met the Primer Jefe, Venustiano Carranza, and observed his triumphal entry into Mexico City. Here are the recollections of the older Ben Muse, recording the earliest travels in what would be an adventurous life.
