Benvenuto Cellini wurde am 3. November 1500 in Florenz geboren; er starb am 13. Februar 1571 in Florenz. Cellini war als italienischer Goldschmied und Bildhauer ein berühmter Vertreter des Manierismus. Er gilt als einer der großen Bildhauer der Nachantike. Nachdem sein Werk mehrere hundert Jahre nahezu vergessen war, wurde es zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts neu entdeckt. Er wirkte an der Schwelle der Hochrenaissance zum Manierismus als Bildhauer, Goldschmied, Medailleur, aber auch als Schriftsteller und Musiker.
