  • - Tales and Folklore from the Shareholders just off Sturgis Road
    af Bill Martin
    183,95 kr.

In Bill Martin's collection of short stories entitled, The Fabulous Ordinary, he observes how nature's many inhabitants work together, co-existing through seasonal changes and life challenges. Credentialed with a good number of years-to-date of observing and living, he uses the "out back" of his home on Sturgis Road as the setting for tales about animals and nature -- many possessing human thoughts and characteristics that reflect human life. Stories about these Sturgis Road "shareholders" parallel human triumphs and struggles. Many times, we are more open to lessons learned as observed through someone else, or even through our animal friends -- after all, tales about animals do not implicate us. With each reading, individuals are likely to glean something different and new. One may interpret these tales to be about endearing animal friends, life in general, politics, or spirituality. Still other tales may be interpreted as reflective sentimental stories inspired by the wisdom of living. Perspective is different for each of us, depending on one's own life experience. Some may discover their own interpretation of each tale changes over several years' time and more living. And -- some may even recognize something of themselves in this interdependent community -- in the shareholders who live just off Sturgis Road.

  • - Memories, Prompted by Letters Home, from a Korean War Soldier
    af Bill Martin
    123,95 kr.

CLOSE CONTACT OVER THE MILES -- reflections on the Korean War, as seen through the eyes of a 20 year old American G.I., remembered and re-told some 64 years later. Bill Martin, the youngest of five loving sons of Hank and Byrdie Martin from rural northern California, recounts memories as a rear area soldier. Through letters home to his girlfriend Bonnie, a connection with normalcy was kept and so was a reminder of what the fight was for. While not fighting directly for our nation's freedom, American troops fought for the freedom of others, slowing the march of communism, and indirectly preserving freedom at home. Bill volunteered to do his part -- to serve for love of family and country, just as his four older brothers had done before him in WWII. Bill's letters home provide a timeline covering his service in Korea, prompting short stories -- not about tactical battles of war, but rather about what Bill calls "soft memories" of war; the human part. These memories focus on relationships, idealism, and the lessons he learned while growing up and maturing in Korea as a young soldier. These many years later, Bill's love of family and country remain strong. He is, however, troubled by what was and still is written by some authors describing troops early in the Korean war -- by writers very knowledgeable on war tactics and troop movements, but way off-base in intimating cowardice of individual soldiers as they retreated early in the conflict to re-group. The term "Bugg'n Out" is often misused and falsely interpreted as a tactic used by individuals to avoid a fight. In reality, Bill encountered fine brave men who were surviving and "Bugg'n Out" to regroup and fight again.

  • - As Described by a Native Son
    af Bill Martin
    223,95 kr.

What makes the feel or texture of a place -- the nuance of character reflected by a location and its people? It comes from the shared history of the land and its inhabitants. At first glance, a newcomer makes a snap judgement -- strictly from outward appearance. But a snap judgment will not accurately describe a location since each is different -- each place has different history. Every place has a color, a flavor, an "after-taste," all its own. To find true local flavor, one must pull back the layers placed there by residents over time to find what ingredients contribute to the local feel or texture. Using both True Tales from historically factual stories, and Tall Tales from fictional stories that are based on truth yet edged in varying depths of malarkey to evoke a smile, a native son reveals the nuance of Siskiyou County character. These tales about "locals," whether animal or human, are told in a way that show the texture: the feel or character of this special place . . . a place called Siskiyou County . . .
