Josh Beane simply knows there is more he can do to improve the culture of his classroom. His colleagues tell him not to worry since he is the best teacher they have seen. Josh begins to see what he can do when he observes Alex Winter, the new math teacher. He is amazed as Alex naturally flows from idea to idea and builds a magnificent culture of learners. Josh and Alex sit down after several months and discover that what works is having a solid understanding of WHY you create a discipline plan and then choose strategies to help you hit that target. Together they create a plan that can be shared to help others develop an understanding of skills to oversee the culture of their classrooms. Along the way, Alex goes from fall guy to go-to guy for help in culture development throughout the school. This work of tactical fiction is intended to show what a classroom can look like when a teacher has a strong sense of WHY they run their classroom as they do and then use tools and processes that support that why. Shared visions, Codes of Conduct, SOP's, Flowcharts and various tools to capture voice are explained both in the narrative and as procedures at the end.

By reading Learner Agency, teachers and leaders will discover research-based strategies for supporting and cultivating students' ability to build agency within themselves"--
