Die Küstenlinie des südlichen Norwegen ist häufig unterbrochen. Daran sind die Berge und die Flüsse schuld. Das Gebirge läuft in Hügel und Landzungen aus, denen oft Inseln vorgelagert sind; die Ströme haben Täler gegraben und münden in Buchten.In solch einer Bucht, dem "Kroken", lag das Gehöft. Ursprünglich hieß der Hof Krokskog, woraus die dänischen Beamten in ihren Protokollen "Krogskov" machten; jetzt heißt er Krogskog. Die Besitzer nannten sich einstmals Kroken; Anders oder Hans Kroken, das waren die Hauptnamen. Später nannten sie sich Krogh, der General vom Geniekorps sogar von Krogh. Jetzt heißen sie recht und schlecht Krog.Alle Leute, die auf den kleinen Dampfern von oder nach der nahen Stadt hier vorbeikamen und an der Landungsbrücke unterhalb der Kapelle anlegten, wußten davon zu erzählen, wie behaglich und traulich geborgen Krogskog doch daläge.Die Berge am Horizont nahmen sich großartig aus; hier vorn aber waren sie niedriger. Zwischen zwei vorspringenden, bewaldeten, langgestreckten Hügelrücken lag der Hof. So dicht drängten sich die Häuser an die Anhöhe zur Rechten, daß es den Dampferpassagieren vorkam, als könne man vom Dach des Hauses auf den Hügel hinüberspringen; der Westwind fand hier keinen Einlaß; wie beim Versteckspiel konnte man zu ihm sagen: "Ein Haus weiter!" Das gleiche konnte man auch zum Nord- und Ostwind sagen. Einzig der Sturm von Süden her kam zu Gast, aber auch nur in aller Bescheidenheit. Die Inseln, eine große und zwei kleine, hielten ihn auf und stutzten ihn zurecht, bis sie ihn weiterziehen ließen. Die hohen Bäume vor dem Hause wiegten nur gerade rhythmisch ihre höchsten Wipfel; die Haltung verloren sie nicht.

Im Tauwetter, auf der Felsenkuppe nach der See zu, stand im letzten Sonnenglanz ein vierzehnjähriger Junge, ganz in sich versunken. Er blickte gen Westen übers Meer hinaus, er blickte gen Osten, auf die Stadt, den Strand, die mächtigen Berge, hinter denen noch höhere Felsengipfel emporragten. Alles in klarer Luft.Der Sturm hatte lange und furchtbarer gewütet, als die ältesten Leute sich entsinnen konnten. Trotz der neuen Mole hatten sich Schiffe im Hafen losgerissen und waren untergegangen. Der Telegraph meldete von Schiffbrüchen die Küste entlang; in der ganzen Umgegend gab es nichts als zerrissene Netze, fortgeschwemmte Fischreusen, verschwundene Bootstege. Und immer noch hatten die Leute Angst, das Schlimmste komme noch erst.Jetzt endlich seit ein paar Stunden war es vorüber; der Sturm hatte sich gelegt, die Windstöße, die ruckweise aufeinander gefolgt waren, hörten auf; kaum noch ein letzter Nachhall war zu spüren.Nur das Meer wollte nicht gehorchen. Die Tiefen aufrühren und dann einfach davonlaufen das geht doch nicht! Wellenzüge, soweit das Auge reichte, höher als haushoch, kamen in endlosen Reihen, mit schaumweißen Kronen und donnerndem Fall. Über Stadt und Strand hin dröhnte ihr Tosen, gewaltig, dumpfrollend, wie Bergrutsche in der Ferne.
