Some people hate them, others are terrified of them. Still others find them filthy, noisy, congested, ugly and downright uninhabitable. But those who choose to live in cities often have a far more complex relationship with their steel and glass environment--an attachment that often mingles irritation with affection, fear with calm, a desire to leave with the imperative to stay. This bond between city dwellers and their metropolitan milieux lies at the heart of Urban Arias. Downtowns, uptowns, midtowns; parks, ghettoes, museums--the rich gamut of what constitutes one of the oldest experiments in human habitation stands at the center of this special issue. Among the two dozen contributors to Urban Arias are Elizabeth Hand, Paul La Farge, Jonathan Lethem, Karen Russell and Luc Sante, along with a previously unpublished interview with Thomas Bernhard, in which the uneasy relationship between rural and urban life is discussed.

From critically acclaimed novelist Bradford Morrow comes a richly told literary thriller about the dark side of the rare book world. The bibliophile community is stunned when a reclusive rare book collector is found on the floor of his Montauk home: hands severed, surrounded by valuable inscribed books and manuscripts that have been vandalized beyond repair. In the weeks following the victim’s death, his sister, Meghan, and her lover—a sometime literary forger whose specialty is the handwriting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—struggle to come to terms with the murder. The police fail to identify a likely suspect, and the case quickly turns cold. Soon, Meghan’s lover begins to receive threatening handwritten letters, ostensibly penned by long-dead authors but really from someone who seems to have disturbing insights into Adam’s death. Understanding that his own life is in jeopardy, he attempts to forge a new beginning for himself and Meghan. But he may not be able to escape his vengeful stalker.

"[A] splendidly written mystery . . . a compelling story. Grade: A" ?Cleveland Plain Dealer "Subtle, distinctive and well-wrought." ?Washington Post Hired by a developer to dowse a lonely forested valley in upstate New York, Cassandra Brooks comes upon a girl hanged from a tree. When she returns with authorities, however, the body has vanished, calling into question her sanity?at least until a dazed, mute girl emerges from the woods, alive and eerily reminiscent of Cassandra's vision of the hanged girl. Increasingly bizarre divinations ensue, leading Cassandra back to a past she thought long behind her, locking her in a mortal chess match with a killer who has returned from the past to haunt her once more. "Sublime . . . creates a seamless breathing breathtaking unity of the literary and the suspense novel, detonating the very notion of genre. Riveting, insightful, sentence-by-sentence charged with feeling, it bears us, helpless, with it on its downward journey to illumination." ?Peter Straub

World Outside the Window: The Selected Essays of Kenneth Rexroth brings together twenty-seven essays written over a period of more than forty years by the man one of his publishers called "an American cultural monument." A brilliant self-taught scholar in fields as diverse as Buddhism and modern French poetry, Rexroth was a poet, philosopher, translator, promoter of poets, conscientious objector, political activist, cultural critic, professional curmudgeon, and teacher. More than one critic has suggested that an individual could pursue a complete curriculum in the humanities simply by reading Rexroth's essays and the works to which they refer. Clear-eyed and clear-headed, Rexroth championed "moral judgment" in the poet and artist from the very first (see "The Function of the Poet in Society," 1936). And while he dismissed many of his essays as "journalism," he remains our sanest guide to the cultural upheaval in American society since World War II. Was it because of his trenchant perspicacity that Rexroth's death in 1982 was widely ignored by the press and cultural establishment, bearing out his own assessment that "When a prophet refuses to go crazy, he becomes quite a problem, crucifixion being as complicated as it is in humanitarian America"? Recently he has been called our "intellectual conscience." It is time to read Rexroth again. This collection has been compiled and edited by Bradford Morrow, editor of Conjunctions magazine and Rexroth's literary executor.
