Next to the Bible, A Treatise on Keeping the Heart, sometimes known as A Saint Indeed-The Great Work of a Christian, by the Rev. John Flavel, may be the most wonderful book I have ever read. It is, however, difficult to read in its original version because of its somewhat archaic linguistic style (the original was penned by Flavel in 1667). For that reason, I have modernized the language and modified some parts in this edition for the sake of clarification in the hope of making this wonderful treatise more accessible to the modern reader. If you are looking for the perfect companion to the Bible, I highly recommend this most wonderful book. This book presents the case for school choice and provides a description of a hypothetical publicly funded Christian charter school grades K-12. The author argues that parents wishing their children to attend a K-12 school in which religious values are affirmed, and in which spiritual as well as physical, mental, and social development are a part of the school curriculum, are unjustly prevented from realizing that aspiration by restrictive laws governing public charter schools. All parents pay taxes in support of public education, but only those parents sending their children to secular schools reap the benefit. And there are private school options to public secular schools, most parents desiring that their children be education in a religious school do not have the financial means to pay tuition. The only fair and equitable solution, the author argues, is for revocation of laws which restrict public funding of K-12 religious charter schools. The author then describes the curriculum and educational philosophy of a hypothetical Christian charter school borrowing from a number of well known and respected educational theorists, philosophers, and Christian educators.

The stated aims of the Sanders series readers was not simply the teaching of reading, but in addition "to provide such lofty models of style, sentiment, of tone, and tendency, as cannot fail to exercise an ennobling, elevating influence over the impressionable nature of youth" (Preface to Sanders High School Reader, 1863) . Of the many editions and revisions of the Sanders' readers published between 1840 and 1890, The School Reader, Fifth Book, by Charles and Joshua Sanders, 1848, stands as the noblest. This particular edition excels in the abundance of its inspiring patriotic, historical and poetic selections. Many of the selections are primary-source documents written by notable Americans in praise of their values, their ideals, their faith, and the wisdom they had gained through life-experiences. The "best of the best" from The School Reader, Fifth Book, are presented here in The Public School Curriculum that Made America Great, and will, no doubt, be of interest, and provide inspiration to readers of every age.

This anthology of early New England sermons, edited by Dr. Byron Perrine, contains a sampling of important documents of American history which illuminate the guiding principles, values, and virtues, upon which early New England life was ordered, principles which contributed to the establishment of constitutional republican democracy in the United States as a whole. These sermons point out the important relationship between religion and democratic government. These sermons will also help the reader understand the dangers posed by "internal threats" to democracy. The early Christian patriots of New England believed that such threats are rooted in excessive "party spirit", loss of religious integrity, and self-serving political ambitions, all of which are a part of life today America is today witnessing rampant distortion of Christian virtues, a willingness to compromise standards of law and decency by political leaders, irrational "party spirit", and, disunity within the government and nation as a whole--problems which early 19th century patriots anticipated and against which they warned. Only a virtuous nation will survive the storms that lie ahead. What is "true patriotism"? The nation's founders, as revealed by these sermons, set forth an historical model for those persons wishing to be something more than counterfeit patriots. It is to our shame that we, as a nation, have fallen so far from the hopes and aspirations of our founding progenitors. It is time for change. This book tells us that the way forward is back to rediscover our historical roots, values, and virtues.
