Hvem kender ikke Svend Poulsen Gjønge, hans tro følgesvend Ib, Kulsoen, kaptajn Kernbok og alle de andre fra beretningen om den dansk/skånske frihedshelt (han kommer fra Gjöinge i Skåne), der bl. a. opererede på Sydsjælland under Svenskekrigene i 1600-tallet - om ikke andet, så fra de talrige mere eller mindre mishandlede udgaver for børn og unge, eller fra film og tv-serier. Her er han i al sin uforkortede glans, sammen med fortsættelsen Dronningens vagtmester, hvor Svend Gjønge og Ib har påtaget sig at bringe så mange som muligt af fru Elsebeths værdigenstande væk fra herregården Gjorslev - og fra den griske besættelsesmagt, først og fremmest repræsenteret ved kaptajn Esner, der ikke lader sig række en sølvkop uden straks at tilrane sig hele stellet. Det går naturligvis ikke stille af. Ib bliver fængslet på Gjorslev, og vor gamle bekendt Kulsoen har også sin grimme finger med i spillet her og der.
Pantin kommer hjem til Danmark efter at have gjort krigstjeneste i Polen og Tyskland under Gustav Vasa. Han tager ophold hos den godmodige herremand Belov og de to kommer godt ud af det sammen. En dag findes Belov brutalt myrdet og hvem gerningsmanden er, er ikke så let at afgøre.
GØNGEHØVDINGEN - alene navnet er en fanfare, som vækker minder om alle tiders mest populære danske børnebog. Men Gøngehøvdingen er meget mere end en spændende børnebog, vel at mærke når den - som her - foreligger i den originale uforkortede udgave som en bog for alle aldersklasser, der holder af underholdning med mening i. Gøngehærens tapre bedrifter under svenskekrigene i 1600-tallet anført af Svend Gønge og hans tapre ven Ib ”Gøngehøvdingen” er indlæst som lydbog af Trols Møller
Carit Etlar er mest kendt for romaner som f. eks. "Gøngehøvdingen" og "Dronningens vagtmester" - men han skrev også en mængde noveller og skuespil. Hvor mange af disse skuespil der blev opført ved jeg ikke - men læst blev de! Vi er kommet helt ud af vanen med at læse skuespil, så derfor: prøv at læse "Lauge med den tungehånd" der handler om adelsmanden Lauge Holk og hans Ingo og foregår midt under den skrækkelige trediveårskrig.
I denne fortælling har Carit Etlar for en gangs skyld bevæget sig udenfor Danmarks grænser - nemlig til Australien Kaldt "Ny-Holland" i 1600-tallet).Sømanden Ralf er havnet i junglen og bliver forfulgt af de vilde. Han møder en mulat der bliver hans forbundsfælle og sammen forsøger de at slå sig igennem. Mulatten har engang været kæreste med en hvid plantageejers datter, hvilket han aldrig kan glemme. Det viser sig, at denne pige er blevet bortført af en fjendtlig stamme - og så går den vilde jagt ellers.
En god gammeldags spøgelseshistorie fra en herregård i det nordjyske.
Her har Carit Etlar, der som bekendt er mest kendt for GØNGEHØVDINGEN, begået en fortælling der foregår på Korsika, hvor det vrimler med præster og banditter, og hvor vendettaer og blodhævn ingen ende vil tage, lige indtil........

Carit Etlars roman Fangen på Kalø foregår på Christian d. 2's tid - en turbulent tid med mange stridigheder. Fangen var den unge Gustav Vasa, som Chr. 2 havde taget som gidsel og som det senere lykkedes at flygte.
