Il Giornale per i bambini fu un periodico emanazione del Fanfulla della Domenica. Esce col primo numero il 7 luglio 1881 e termina le sue pubblicazioni nel giugno 1889. Ideatore e fondatore Ferdinando Martini ne è anche il primo direttore. Fin dal primo numero i collaboratori sono numero e assai noti. La fortuna del Giornale deve molto alla pubblicazione di Storie di un Burattino, da parte di Carlo Lorenzini (meglio noto come Carlo Collodi). L’autore, succeduto nella direzione del Giornale per bambini, proprio nel Giornale pubblica il suo immortale capolavoro, che in seguito prenderà forma di libro, dal titolo Le avventure di Pinocchio.Carlo Collodi, all'anagrafe Carlo Lorenzini è stato uno scrittore e giornalista italiano. È divenuto celebre come autore del romanzo Le avventure di Pinocchio. Abbracciando le idee mazziniane, partecipa alle rivolte risorgimentali del 1848-49. Negli anni Cinquanta , nel suo ruolo appunto di giornalista, descrive la realtà toscana cogliendone i lati spiritosi e bizzarri, fatta di intrighi e storielle da caffè per mezzo di fulminanti invenzioni linguistiche.
