Catherine Hughes remembers exactly what she was wearing that fateful day, April 19, 2001 - an orange polo shirt, khaki capris, brown suede boots, and a matching brown suede button down blazer. This was the day that she thought she would make it home to schedule an evaluation for her son before heading to work for her evening shift. This was the day she thought she was on her way to getting answers about her son's struggles. This was the day that she thought she would soon obtain services that she believed he desperately needed. This was also the day that her son was taken from her arms, and she was thrown in prison without bond. These chapters detail her fight to clear her name while accepting her son's diagnosis of autism, their pursuit of services and their new way forward. These chapters share both trials and triumphs, along with some sage guidance and resources from The Caffeinated Advocate herself. This is their long-awaited story.

He comes from a family of bestselling authors and editors, and now he has decided to share his story, in his own words. Meet Christian Tomko!
Transforming or transmitting "If our pain doesn't transform us, we will transmit it," says Franciscan Richard Rohr. So many of us are holding on to our pain as we hurt ourselves and in turn, hurt our friends and our families. Many of us have lived by the old cliche of "hurt people hurt people" and know it as true. We often hold on to the pain instead of letting it go. Join us on a poetic journey of hope and healing where our pain can take us from hurt people who hurt people to healed people who can help heal. If we let our pain take us on the healing journey, we will no longer transmit it. We can let go, we can grow. We can be... TRANSFORMED!
Mary Nixon-Hahn, author of the book From the Inside Out, and the eBook Autism in the Workplace, now brings us this guide with strategies for both employers and employees. Drawing upon her experiences as an entry-level part-time sales floor associate, a team supervisor, and now a CEO for her own advocacy organization, Ausome Angels Awareness & Inclusion, Hahn provides readers with advice for trainers, reflections for employees, and demonstrates a new way forward.Hahn's guide with thirteen critical tips shows us that when we invest time, energy, compassion, and ask the right questions, we can help individuals with autism and/or other disabilities to chart their own course for success in the workplace -- and learn something about ourselves, too, along the way.***"Mary Hahn's latest publication that provides 'Strategies From the Inside Out, ' is a mind-blowing experience. Hahn, being an autistic adult herself, has a unique ability to position herself as both the learner and the expert. Who better to provide insight and tips for teaching people how to mentor individuals with autism than someone who has cultivated a career, moving from retail associate to a revolutionary leader in our world?" Every 73 seconds another American is sexually assaulted. 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted). About 3% of American men-or 1 in 33-have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. From 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse (National Sexual Violence Resource Center). Those who have been sexually violated often suffer the impact of the abuse for many years to come, sometimes even for a lifetime. Many lose their sense of worth, their identity, their purpose, and their voice. The brave men and women who share their stories in this book made the decision to be SILENT NO MORE! They found supernatural strength to turn trauma into resilience, not just for their sake but also for the sake of others. Sexual assault in childhood or adulthood impacts not only the victim but also the victim's family and friends as well as society as a whole. Relationships, families, and careers are impacted as well. In this regard, sexual assault is a public health problem that concerns everyone. We can all do something to stop sexual abuse in our communities and help other heal.

Chronic illnesses affect us emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially. They also impact our relationships, careers, and dreams. They take a toll on us. Many have founded organizations, sparked movements, and created other initiatives that are shaking up our world.Although their stories and personalities differ, they are unified in their message. They have one hope and one goal only, and that is to remind everyone to never give up no matter what circumstances they are enduring. No matter what cards you have been dealt in this life, no matter what illnesses you're experiencing, you are made to overcome! This message resonates through each chapter in this book, and its truth will not be silenced. We are rising above chronic illnesses, and so can you!

Imagine that it is your responsibility to treat a mentally-ill child based solely on your perception.Imagine being allowed to mess up under the guise of psychology being an imperfect science. Can someone be disabled because of an inevitable mental illness, or is this person just a product of a flawed system that is still trying to figure out solutions? The safety of being in control with no repercussions often leads to impulsive decision-making and a lack of accountability. The phrase "perception is reality" has done more harm than good for our society.***********"Talented artist and experienced clinician Louis Bianco's story about an individual's mental health journey is both incredibly riveting and positively captivating. Bianco will challenge even the most critical thinkers to reconsider everything we think we know about disability and diagnosis." Catherine Hughes, best-selling author, blogger at The Caffeinated Advocate, editor, speaker and trainer"Brilliant! In this work of heart, Louis Bianco uses his expertise to eloquently uncover many of the issues that plague our families, our education and mental health systems, and our society at large. A mirror, when clear, reflects an exact representation of any who stand before it. Each gift, imperfection, and scar is seen clearly and in detail. A mirror that is skewed will still portray a reflection, but the reflection will not directly represent reality. This is the general theory behind the famed Funhouse Mirrors, and why they are so intriguing. In an instant, one can see their reality differently. Sometimes we see something we dislike, and other times, we see what we prefer.Louis Bianco believes our perceptions are like mirrors, reflecting what occurs in real life back into our cognition. Skewed perceptions, much like mirrors, will distort our cognition, causing us to see reality differently than what is actually in front of us.America, is our cognition distorted?Through this book, Bianco hopes that each of us can decide for ourselves how accurately our perceptions depict reality.*****"Louis Bianco once again provides our world with extraordinary testimony that is presented in a well-organized, scientific, and yet graceful manner. In Bianco's first creation, he challenged everything we knew about disability and diagnosis. In this powerful book, he challenges every perception we have about our country, our world, and how we see ourselves in our own 'mirror.' Funhouse Mirrors is a must for every bookshelf. I assure you, you will be grateful for this introspective journey with this gifted and brilliant author." Catherine Hughes, bestselling author, blogger, coach, editor, speaker, and trainer, The Caffeinated Advocate

Diarists become historians when their lives are touched by momentous events, whether fleeing the Great Fire of London, or hiding in an attic from the Nazi's. My grandfather Harry Barrett Pratt was born in 1890 in the North East of England. He oiled the wheels of Sir Thomas Lipton's grocery empire throughout the turbulent first half of the 20th Century, broken only by military service during WW1, which took him to the lesser known theatre of war in East Africa. He was a workaholic, intent on providing for his family. From shop floor to Board of Directors, he was a company man. He had the ear and respect of Sir Thomas. His career span two world wars and the financial depression He kept a meticulous diary during those years, which gives a fascinating insight into the impact of global conflict on a nation. This is a tribute to a generation.
