Ma, d'altra parte, ebbro d'orgogliosa ambizione, aveva veduto i signorotti d'Italia cercarlo amico o paventarlo nemico; avea veduto umiliarsegli davanti quelli che, mentre durava in condizione privata, lo soperchiavano: avea veduto (quel che piu valutava) inchinarsegli certi cittadini, gran vantatori delle patrie liberta: all'intorno tutto pendeva da un suo cenno: ed ora una donna, una sua prigioniera, osava resistergli, insultarlo, -poiche nel vocabolario dei tiranni chiamasi insulto il protestare contro le loro iniquita. Di cio l'amor suo proprio non sapeva darsi pace, e si rodeva entro, e il ciglio corrugato, e l'aggrondatura della fronte davano spia dell'animo esagitato. La gente, che lo vedeva venir via per le strade a spron battuto, con dietro la turba e la famiglia, salvavansi a precipizio; e se alcuno gli alzava gli occhi in volto, avvertendo quello iroso cipiglio, esclamava: -Acqua grossa oggi! e facendo di berretto, tirava muro muro. Non ebbe questa precauzione un fanciullo di forse dieci anni, il quale era stato messo da' suoi genitori sull'uscio di via con un canestrino di ciliegie primaticcie, per offrirlo al principe, sperandone, come altre volte gli era successo, una buona mancia. Attento ad ubbidire senza piu altro guardare, il garzone si posto in mezzo alla strada con un ginocchio a terra e il canestro sovra il capo: ma Luchino quando se n'accorse fe' un cenno ai mastini suoi fedeli compagni, e questi gittatisi sul malcapitato, l'addentarono, lo pestarono, senza che nessuno, nemmanco i parenti, ardissero dare il ben gli sta a quegli animali.
