  • - Being a Collection of Sentences, Illustrations, and Quaint Sayings from the Works of that Renowned Puritan Thomas Brooks
    af Charles Haddon Spurgeon
    113,95 kr.

"Brooks scatters stars with both his hands: he hath dust of gold; in his storehouse are all manner of precious stones." So wrote C. H. Spurgeon in his preface to this book. He counted Thomas Brooks among his favorite Puritan authors, and it's not hard to see why. Brooks' popularity lies both in his subjects-practical truths, central to the Christian life-and in the manner of his presentation. He is consistently direct, urgent, fervent, full of Scripture, and able to choose words which make his sentences stick in one's mind. This book is a collection of sentences, illustrations, and quaint sayings from this renowned Puritan. Gathered carefully by Spurgeon out of the entire set of Brooks' Works, it remains an excellent introduction to both the man and his writings.

  • - or How to lead sinners to the Saviour. By: C. H. Spurgeon ( Charles Haddon Spurgeon )
    af Charles Haddon Spurgeon
    118,95 kr.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon 19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) was an English Particular Baptist preacher. Spurgeon remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers". He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. He also famously denied being a Protestant, and held to the view of Baptist Successionism. Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was part of several controversies with the Baptist Union of Great Britain and later he left the denomination over doctrinal convictions. In 1867, he started a charity organisation which is now called Spurgeon's and works globally. He also founded Spurgeon's College, which was named after him posthumously. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held his listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians hold his writings in exceptionally high regard among devotional literature.Born in Kelvedon, Essex, Spurgeon's conversion from nominal Anglicanism came on 6 January 1850, at age 15. On his way to a scheduled appointment, a snow storm forced him to cut short his intended journey and to turn into a Primitive Methodist chapel in Artillery Street, Newtown, Colchester where, he claimed, God opened his heart to the salvation message. The text that moved him was Isaiah 45:22 - "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else." Later that year on 4 April 1850, he was admitted to the church at Newmarket.

The topic now before us is the use of illustrations in our sermons. Perhaps we shall best subserve our purpose by working out an illustration in the present address; for there is no better way of teaching the art of pottery than by making a pot. Quaint Thomas Fuller says, "Reasons are the pillars of the fabric of a sermon; but similitudes are the windows which give the best lights." The comparison is happy and suggestive, and we will build up our discourse under its direction. The chief reason for the construction of windows in a house is, as Fuller says, to let in light. Parables, similes, and metaphors have that effect; and hence we use them to illustrate our subject, or, in other words, to "brighten it with light," for that is Dr. Johnson's literal rendering of the word illustrate. Often when didactic speech fails to enlighten our hearers we may make them see our meaning by opening a window and letting in the pleasant light of analogy. Our Saviour, who is the light of the world, took care to fill his speech with similitudes, so that the common people heard him gladly; his example stamps with high authority the practice of illuminating heavenly instruction with comparisons and similes.
