Shots rang out at Huber's Station, a railroad depot just south of Louisville, Kentucky on August 11, 1904. Less than a day later, Francis Hagan lay dead as his grieving widow arrived from their Alabama home, too late to bid him farewell. Meanwhile his killer, John Barbour, sat in jail pondering his future. Within these pages follow the trail of events that brought these men, once friends, to this tragic end; and learn what John Barbour's fate would be. This true story is filled with charges of deception, fraud, and attempted assassinations, and is based on original court records and depositions, and on newspaper accounts of the time. In the end, the reader is challenged to decide if justice was truly served.

Before it was an official county, men came to Bullitt County seeking the salt licks found there. The buffalo and other large animals showed the way, leaving broken paths through the wilderness that led to the salt licks like the spokes of a wheel to its hub. Salt was a necessity for preserving the game they killed, and for other uses as well. Following these seekers of salt were others seeking homesteads, or lands for investment. The county was formed in 1797 with its county seat at Shepherdsville on the banks of Salt River. In this book we take you from those early times though the rise and demise of an iron industry, the opening of new towns, following its history that included a mineral water spa, and the coming of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. We examine the county's politics, and share its struggles during the Civil War. The book also includes an abstracted transcription of one of the County Court order books, as well as a full name index to assist in locating people.

When Lou Browning reported the hidden still to the prohibition agents in 1928, she set in motion events that led to her sister's death, and the attempted murder of the rest of her family. This illiterate and landless Browning family had long been dependent on neighbors for odd jobs and handouts. They were often suspected of helping themselves to what didn't belong to them, but were generally tolerated by most folks until now. Depression had not yet struck the general populous, but farmers had been feeling its effects almost since the end of World War I, and producing bootleg whiskey from their surplus grain was all that kept some of the farms going. When Lou Browning's grandchildren were taken by authorities and placed in foster care, Lou and her daughter mistakenly blamed it on two local farmers, John Bolton and Clarence Crenshaw. This led Lou to report the still being operated by Clarence's son Elmer Crenshaw. Agents raided the still and arrested Elmer on a Friday. By the next morning, the hut where Lou's family lived had burned to the ground, and Lou's sister Kate was dead. This is the story of these events, later called the Browningtown Massacre, and of the trial of the nine men accused of the crime.

On December 20, 1917, an express train crashed into the rear of a local passenger train at Shepherdsville, Kentucky, in a collision that would leave 49 dead, and as many seriously injured. With Christmas fast approaching, many of these had been to Louisville for a day of shopping, and were heading to their homes in Shepherdsville, Bardstown, Springfield, and places in between. Christmas would never be the same for them or their families. This is the story of that horrendous crash, and of the people whose lives were changed forever.
