This book provides a fascinating account of the history, biology, and cultural significance of the American bison, a magnificent animal that once roamed the Great Plains in immense herds. The author describes the bison's habitat, behavior, and role in Native American culture, and also recounts the tragic story of its near-extinction at the hands of hunters and ranchers. Twelve moons have wasted, and no tidings still! Tecumseh must have perished! Joy has tears As well as grief, and mine will freely flow- Sembling our women's piteous privilege- Whilst dry ambition ambles to its ends. My schemes have swelled to greatness, and my name Has flown so far upon the wings of fear That nations tremble at its utterance. Our braves abhor, yet stand in awe of me, Who ferret witchcraft out, commune with Heaven, And ope or shut the gloomy doors of death. All feelings and all seasons suit ambition! Yet my vindictive nature hath a craft, In action slow, which matches mother-earth's: First seed-time-then the harvest of revenge. Who works for power, and not the good of men, Would rather win by fear than lose by love. Not so Tecumseh-rushing to his ends, And followed by men's love-whose very foes Trust him the most. Rash fool! Him do I dread, And his imperious spirit. Twelve infant moons Have swung in silver cradles o'er these woods, And, still no tidings of his enterprise, Which-all too deep and wide-has swallowed him. And left me here unrivalled and alone.

The important events of A.D. 1857, and the negotiations which led to the Transfer of the Hudson's Bay Territories-Former Treaties and the Treaty Commission of 1899. The terms upon which Canada obtained her great possessions in the West are generally known, and much has been written regarding the tentative steps by which, after long years of waiting, she acquired them. The distinctively prairie, or southern, portion of the country and its outliers, constituting "Prince Rupert's Land," had been claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company since May, 1670, as an absolute freehold. This and the North-West Territories, in which, under terminable lease from the Crown, the Company exercised, as in British Columbia, exclusive rights to trade only, were, as the reader knows, transferred to Canada by Imperial sanction at the same time. It is not the author's intention, therefore, to cumber his pages with trite or irrelevant matter; yet certain transactions which preceded this primordial and greatest treaty of all not unfittingly may be set forth, though in the briefest way, as a pardonable introduction to the following record.

1926. Contains Dreamland and other Poems, The American Bison, Through the Mackenzie Basin, Memoirs and Reminiscences. From the cover: Few men were so closely associated with the later history of the West as Charles Mair. He served in both campaigns against Riel. During the first uprising he was captured, condemned to death, and escaped. He was secretary to the Scrip Commission that went into the Mackenzie Basin in 1899 to treat with the Indians for a tract of territory, and his narrative of this Expedition had a distinct influence in attracting settlers to the Athabasca and Peace River Districts. The treatise on the Bison in North American read before the Royal Society of Canada is one of the most valuable contributions to the study of these almost extinct animals. Mair is considered by many to be the greatest Poet of Canada.

  • - An Account of the Signing of Treaty No. 8 and the Scrip Commission, 1899
    af Charles Mair
    328,95 kr.

When Through the Mackenzie Basin was published in 1908, it became an immediate success as an adventure book on the unsettled regions of Northwest Canada. Many of the issues the book addresses are still topical and contentious, a century after the signing of Treaty 8. In this new edition, David Leonard''s introduction puts Mair''s work into its historical context, while Brian Calliou''s introduction adds a First Nations perspective. Charles Mair''s first-hand account of the siging of Treaty No. 8 at Lesser Slave Lake in 1899 and the distribution of scrip in the District of Athabaska "has come to constitute the most detailed published source for the interpretation of these events," albeit from Mair''s imperial perspective, notes Leonard, as "a government supporter, ardent Canadian nationalist and firm believer in the British institutions." This edition also includes the complete text of Treaty No. 8 including signatories, the "Order In Council Ratifying Treaty No. 8," and "The Report of Commissioners for Treaty No. 8."
