Les Malatesta étaient originaires de Penna Billi, dans le Montefeltre (plus tard le duché d'Urbin); le premier dont on ait gardé mémoire était Ugo, dont le petit-fils, Giovanni, avait reçu, dès 1150, le droit de cité à Rimini. Ce Giovanni avait eu un fils du même nom que lui, homme violent et farouche, qui avait reçu de ses contemporains le surnom de Mala Testa; il allait le transmettre à toute sa race. Soldat valeureux, ce Giovanni, déjà célèbre en maintes rencontres, avait été appelé à Rimini par le podestat d'alors pour défendre la ville contre les ennemis du dehors; il y avait fondé sa maison et pris pour femme une fille de Pietro degli Onesti; en 1239, ayant occupé à son tour le siège de podestat, il frayait la voie à tous les siens. Le podestat de Rimini laissa deux fils: l'un, Giovanni, épousa la fille du comte de Sogliano, dont il prit le nom en continuant la race des comtes souverains de ce domaine; l'autre fut le fameux Malatesta de Verucchio, ainsi nommé parce qu'il résidait dans le château de Verucchio, qui lui avait été donné en dot. Ce fut le premier chef guelfe des Romagnes; il devait vivre tout un siècle et devenir le guerrier légendaire des grandes luttes engagées contre les gibelins. Dante allait le stigmatiser envers ineffaçables. Verucchio eut quatre fils: l'un Giovanni il Sciancato (le déhanché) fut le mari de Francesca du Polenta, connue dans l'histoire et immortalisée dans la légende sous le nom de Françoise de Rimini; un autre était Paolo il Bello, l'amant de Françoise et la victime de son propre frère. Le troisième fut le plus célèbre: c'est ce cruel Malatestino del Occhio...
