ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The book of the year. It defines the end of the era of globalization and explains the biggest geopolitical conflict since the Cold War.FINANCIAL TIMES BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR ACCORDING TO THE ECONOMIST NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER If there's one conflict that's defining global geopolitics right now, it's the chip war. All of today's technologies, from missiles to microwaves, from smartphones to cars, are powered by semiconductors. The world economy, the balance of power, military supremacy, and industrial development depend on its constant production. Until recently, the United States was the leading producer of semiconductors, allowing it to maintain its leadership as the world's leading superpower. However, its dominant position is increasingly threatened by competitors from Taiwan, Korea, Europe and, above all, China, which annually injects billions into a processor manufacturing program in order to catch up with its American competitor. Not only is America's economic prosperity at stake, but so is its military superiority.Chris Miller shows how microprocessors have revolutionized the world and changed the course of history, and how the struggle for this technology could lead not only to its global scarcity, but also to the birth of a new Cold War with a hostile superpower desperate to bridge the gap separating it from its rival.Enlightening, pertinent and captivating, The Chip Wars is an essential work to understand the vital role of this technology in the current political and economic situation and the future that awaits us.

Let me be clear that this was never intended to become a book. As a matter of fact there never really was any intention. The genesis of this project was a dream. Sometime in late March 2018, I woke up early in the morning on a weekend. I am unsure what my dream was about, but I knew immediately after that I needed to commit myself to write the Navy football program one letter a week for a year. Why one letter a week? Why for a year? I have no idea. It was just a dream I had. It may sound crazy, but that is exactly what happened. The following week I sent my first letter. I also want to make it clear that I am not a writer. If you are looking for some sort of literary masterpiece, you have come to the wrong place. I am just a football coach. I am passionate about my wife, my children, my family, and my profession. Nearly every one of the letters you are about to read was written during 2nd period (my off period) every Thursday. I usually knocked them out in about 30-45 minutes. I never planned the letters either. I simply wrote what was on my mind that day. In that sense, the words are very real and raw to my reality at that time. I was not until I was nearly finished with the 52nd letter and I had not received a response from Coach Niumatalolo when my uncle suggested the idea of a book. You see, I forwarded a copy of every letter to him after I wrote it. I would mail a hard copy of each letter to the Naval Academy, but before I did, I took a picture and sent it to Uncle John. He said it could make a tremendous gift that I could pass down to my children and grandchildren one day. Since I had no expectations when I began this crazy project, I figured, why not. Since re-reading the letters, I found it a bit ironic that the year I did this just happened to be the worst season of my career. It was also a rollercoaster of a ride in my personal life. All of which leads to a fascinating read. It was a year that tried me mentally in profound ways. In a weird way, I am satisfied by that. It's easy to write and sustain commitment when everything in life is going well. What's difficult, is staying committed to a project or cause when things are hard. That is exactly the kind of year I had. I feel that this book could serve as inspiration future members of my family and beyond. Don't ever give up. When life knocks you down (and it will) get back up, dust yourself off and keep pushing forward and DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP.

Heads will roll, lives will be cut short, and the Devil will have his due. After all, when you dance with the Devil, you don't get to pick the tune. Critical Acclaim for WAKING UP THE DEVIL: "Chris Miller is one of the best kept secrets in crime fiction. But he won't be a secret anymore once readers get ahold of this masterful new offering." -Andy Rausch, author of Hell To Pay "A knuckleduster of a racing-against-the-clock thriller, with loads of balls to the wall action. Miller's Cade Samson makes most tough-guy protagonists look as menacing as Dylan Mulvaney slurping on a Bud Light. To quote from the book: 'Forget rock and roll; it's time for heavy metal.'" -Michael Bruce Blackwell, author of Wildlife on the Serengeti

Northern Michigan Asylum, which opened in 1885, was known during most of its years as Traverse City State Hospital. It was run during its first decades by Dr. James Decker Munson, who left his legacy in the landscaped grounds and the medical center that today bears his name. Traverse City State Hospital served the mental health needs of a large part of Michigan for 104 years until its closure in 1989, housing a population as large as 3,000 in its many buildings. This book traces the history of this great institution, from the local and mental health context in which it was founded, through its growth, development, and decline, and finally to its renovation and preservation as a vital part of the Traverse City community.
Dreamland (or a musical riff on Shakespeare's Midsummer set during the declassification of Area 51) is exactly what the title says it is, or is it? Who thought it would be a good idea to give a group of honor students free rein over a top-secret military base two days before it opens to the public? Will there be aliens? Maybe. A show choir? Definitely. A hilarious, hijinks-filled musical with a score that blends contemporary musical theatre pop with the smooth sounds of the 1950s. A brainchild of Chris Miller & Nathan Tysen, songwriters of Tuck Everlasting on Broadway.
The creator of Animal House at last tells the real story of the fraternity that inspired the iconic film - a story far more outrageous (and funny!) than any movie could ever capture.
When Vladimir Putin first took power in 1999, he was a little-known figure ruling a country that was reeling from a decade and a half of crisis. In the years since, he has reestablished Russia as a great power. How did he do it? What principles have guided Putin's economic policies? What patterns can be discerned? In this new analysis of Putin's Russia, Chris Miller examines its economic policy and the tools Russia's elite have used to achieve its goals. Miller argues that despite Russia's corruption, cronyism, and overdependence on oil as an economic driver, Putin's economic strategy has been surprisingly successful.Explaining the economic policies that underwrote Putin's two-decades-long rule, Miller shows how, at every juncture, Putinomics has served Putin's needs by guaranteeing economic stability and supporting his accumulation of power. Even in the face of Western financial sanctions and low oil prices, Putin has never been more relevant on the world stage.
